Hello!
I am trying to get my 9 week old DD on EASY, but the problem is for the past 3 weeks, she has not been napping longer than 30 minutes at a time unless I'm holding her. Here is what I do: as soon as she starts yawning (not much longer after her feed), I swaddle her, start the white noise, and rock her until she's drowsy. She will usually fall asleep on her own, but then after 30 minutes like clockwork she's wide awake. I have tried letting her fuss a bit to see if she goes back to sleep (she doesn't) but I don't let her CIO, I pick her up at the first real cry. I have also tried the shh/pat both before and after she wakes, but no success. I end up rocking her back to sleep and letting her sleep in my arms and even doing this from the start for a later nap because I know if she needs to sleep. If she doesn't get sufficient naps, she is really fussy and overtired by evening and hard to put to bed. I know I'm guilty of accidental parenting here, but what do I do? Do I try the shh/pat again with every nap? What do I do if she won't go back to sleep? If it isn't putting her back to sleep and she ends up overtired at night, won't this set up a cycle of bad night sleeping makes bad napping and vice versa? I should say that she doesn't have this problem at night (when she's had enough daytime sleep from me holding her). She puts herself to sleep fine and sleeps longer stretches (5.5 hours last night and 7 the night before, though before that it was more like 3 or 4 hours).  I don't think her activities are overstimulating, usually just a diaper change and some talking or a few minutes in her swing(I don't even turn the music on). Any ideas and help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi hun, welcome to BW :)

I'm guilty of accidental parenting

First, don't worry about AP at this age.  overtiredness can hit so quickly that many moms use AP a fair bit until the 3 month mark.. me included.  Heck, I still use it at 16.5 months if needed!

As a general rule, 30 min naps are a sign that baby is overtired when put down to sleep.  The fact that you mention that she yawns a few times before you do wind down supports this.  At this young age, you want to be putting her down as she starts to yawn ;)  Sounds like you need to have a crystal ball, hey?  ;)

How long is she awake before you are putting her to sleep?  Meaning from the time her eyes open to the time they close again?

Thank you for the encouragement! I feel a lot less stressed about AP now. Looking back over the past few days, her awake time (including feeding, activity, and wind down) averages 1.5 hours to 1 hour 40 minutes. Should I cut that back to maybe 1 hour 15 - 1 hour 20 minutes? So I guess I need to be starting the swaddling and rocking before she starts yawning, maybe around 1 hour after she wakes if it takes about 15 minutes to fall asleep? Thanks so much for your help!

You got it :)

At this age, you want her to be placed in the crib just as those yawns are starting ;)
