Feeding questions
« on: April 03, 2012, 09:53:21 am »
I am new to BW, and before birth, thought I'd do Gina but think BW is a bit more straightforward to follow.
Charlie is a week old.
I have a couple of questions about feeding:
- I am currently feeding on demand, so approx every 2-3 hours in the day and every 3-4 hours at night. He asks when he wants to feed, so sometimes the timing goes a bit out. Should I make him wait for a bit longer before feeding or will this happen over time?
- He always falls asleep on the breast, but then when I put him down, will wake up again. Do I need to do some kind of A after feeding?
- Do I need to feed him from both breasts at the moment, he comes off the one he's been feeding off on his own but very quickly will start to chew his hands, a cue that he's still hungry. Should I give him a few minutes to see if he wants any more? Problem is sometimes I'll give him a few minutes and he'll drop off, but will refuse any more from the breast.
All advice welcome thank you!

Hi, and Congratulations on your new LO! Also, welsome to BW'er. =)

I would not wait to feed him at all at one week old because you are establishing your supply so you want to feed as much as possible right now! There will be time for getting him on a routine later. ;)

The A time that you're looking at when they're this young is a diaper change, a bath, or a cuddle. And A times are super short! Depending on how long he takes to feed, you may only have a 10-15 minute A time and then he'll be ready to go back to sleep.

Yes, you want him to take both sides if you can,; again, this is because you're establishing your supply. So, what I did (and still sometimes do (and my ds is almost 7 months!)) is change his diaper or simply walk around for a few minutes. Then I sit back down and start feeding again. This almost always works, but he may nurse for less time than he did on the first-and that's because he *is* full at that point.

Hth =)

Hi, and welcome!  :)
Congrats on your baby!

Like PP said, these early weeks are so important to establishing your supply.
Some good information here:

It sounds like you're doing great!
