28 month old night wakings
« on: April 09, 2012, 14:27:21 pm »
Hi all,

I have a very similar problem with my 28th month son and he has all teeth!!!

He sleeps only 1.30 hours nap between 1.30 and 3 and he goes to sleep easy around 8 o'clock, but he as well comes at least once but there are times of 3-4 times.

I have started to short his day nap to 1.15m, but I see very little improvement at nights.

I have notice when he comes around 3-5 times he is going through some developmental changes, but normally he just needs to be put down back in bed and he will doze immediatelly.

He sleeps on his own since he is 16 weeks old, but somehow I do not manage to get him through the night.

My doctor adviced to let him scream, but I do not want to do that since I believe the trust we have built might be damaged.

Do you have any advice?

thanks in advance

Definitely. Please go with your instinct here and do not let him CIO.

What time does he wake in the morning?

Catherine,

Thanks dearly for your support.

He does not have an specific time. I would say the most common would be between 1.30 and 3.

But for instance yesterday he was up at 3.30 and was not fully asleep until like 4.30 or 5, did not check really the time. He would let me go to my room but re-call sometime after, that I felt it was like 20 minutes or so.

The ugly times he starts around 1 and finishes only at 5 am or so.

Yesterday at the end he really went to sleep after a little cuddle.

What do you think?

I'd suggest he was UT and it may be time to cap the nap (or lose it). What time does his day start?

Does he ever have a shorter nap? Or any days where he doesn't nap?

Hola Catherine,

Well I'm on the way to shorten it to 1 hour. We are on 1 hour and 15 mins and it doesn't seem to make a difference.

Don't you think he is too jung to cut off the nap?

Kind Regards

How long these nw does last for? When did they started? Did he sttn before?
I agree it would be usefull if you post his routine, so we can have some background.
Is he going through some developmental change? My ds is the same age fo yours and we've just started pt and this made a big change in his sleep needs and after one week we're not adjusted...

Possibly too young to get rid of it completely - but each LO really is so different. I know of LO's who are no longer napping at 2yrs, and others that are still napping at 4yrs. It's likely to just be the start. For us it has been a long road, DS started with needing his nap adjusted just beofre he turned 2 - a year on and he's just about completely dropped it.

Hola,

Thanks again for your replies.

Hopefully a short background. Bas has never trully slept through the night. When he was baby he used to wake up at nights and be fed.

That lasted for almost a year or maybe more, cannot really remember. He used always to wake up a different time, and that's why I kept feeding.

He is really big for his age, so I assumed it was trully hunger.

It stopped naturally. We didn't need to train him to drop the bottle.

The rutine daily changed timing wise because he used to wake up mornings in very different timings. Sometimes at 5, sometimes at 7, sometimes at 6. No two days were ever the same.

Now he wakes up around 7 more or less every morning. But normally he will NW last around 4 or 5.

When he wakes at night he normally needs 2 minutes, you go lay him down, get him his blanky and goes down again. Many times however he needs longer to settle down. Most of this ones he needs/wants an extra cuddle. Which we normally give him.

He does not cry, or most of the times he doesn't. He just calls and calls. We normally wait until the third call to come.

Today's routine is more or less so:

7. 13.00         Wake up and start activity (He does go to daycare)
13.30 - 14.45  Sleep
14.45             Activity
19.30             Wind down/Sleep

I cannot get an schedule together for the night. Although he has waves. So he had a wave where he would wake up always around 1.30, then he had a wave of about 2.30. Now we are in the wave around 3.30.

Of course develpmental changes mean more or less he will be up every hour from around 1 until 6 am.

I had always have the feeling he is in a permanent developmental change. He acts older as his age, he is physically bigger as the kids his age and he is a very big heart walking with diaper.

We have started pt since last weekend, but all above is beyond this time.

Thanks again

Mmm it could well be pt. We've started pt also last week and since we started we had a crazy period: ds was impossible during the day, like being all time ot, and he slept A LOT for 4 days (meaning 11-12 h night and 2+h nap, while normally we have 10.5-11 h night with 1.5h nap). Then we had two days of very low sleep and now it seems more normal (I hope), and the behavior also improved. So I just realized that pt is actually a big developmental leap for them, they really have to learn a new ability, which is holding pee and poo... It is possible that it causes nw too.

I agree, the PTing could be causing an issue.

I think I would adjust the nap for a few days and see what effect that has. From how you describe the NWs he certainly sounds UT to me. Perhaps try something like this:-

WU: 7am
Nap: 1.30 - 2.30pm (although this may be better a bit earlier if you think he'll do it? Maybe 1pm - 2pm?)
BT: Asleep for 7.30pm

What do you think?
