7wo, how many NF?
« on: April 11, 2012, 19:33:40 pm »
We started EASY 2 weeks ago, and overall things are going well.  We had a bit of a 'setback' during DS 6 week growth spurt (hourly feeds, eekk), but now back down to normal.  We're usually about 2.5 hour EASY.

We usually feed at 4, 6, & 8.  Put down to bed after 8pm feed.  Sometimes we dreamfeed, sometimes not.  Regardless of DF, DS is still up a lot throughout the night... usually every 1.5 hours or so.  I KNOW he can do longer, and I know he's getting enough milk during the day.

Any advice on how we can get a bit more sleep during night?  Should I try shh/pat & paci tonight?  So DF at 11, feed at 2, and then paci when he wakes at 3:30am?

Cheers

Hugs hun... NWing is exhausting stuff!

As a general rule, if he can go 2.5 hrs during the day, he can do the same at night.

At 7 weeks, a DF plus 2 or 3 NF's is normal.  Depends on if you cluster or not... since you do, I would say DF plus 2 overnight.

If he wakes at night before the 2.5 hr mark, resettle with shush/pat or a paci and only feed once it has been at least 2.5 hrs... over time, start to increase this time between feeds and be sure that he is getting loads of calories in the day time ;)

I would like to pop this over to a feed board, are you breast or bottle feeding?  Thanks and welcome to BW  :-*

Proud to have breastfed for a combined total of 35 months

Do you single or double side feed?  What is he like at night feeds?  Does he seem to be taking big, full feeds, or does he just suck for a little bit to get himself back to sleep.  He shouldn't need to eat every 1.5 hours so he's probably just looking to suck.  Definitely worth a shot with the paci.  With my ds, we were at a df and 2 NFs at this stage.  Actually, at 7 weeks, I think my girls were probably both doing the df and 2 NFs as well.    Are you burping him well?  Any chance the NWs are due to some sort of discomfort?

Thanks for the replies ladies.

He takes a 'proper' length feed - 10-15 mins on one side (same as he does during day time feeds).  I don't always burp him afterwards, so he may have wind issues.

Tonight, I'll try & burp after each time and also try & hold him off as long as possible for at least the first NW (not sure I have the energy to do it for both!)

However, nice to know that 2 NW/Feeds is sort of 'normal' for 7wo.  I had read in Tracey's book that once they hit 10lbs (LO is 11lb 7oz), they should be able to do 8 hours at night....

DF at 11ish
NW at 1/2 and 3/4
Awake at 7

(Feel like I'm preparing to do 'battle')

There's a couple of different numbers quoted for sleep totals at night -- and I think that it depends so much on your baby.  For me, my smallest baby did the best stretches at night from early on -- my ds who is now approaching 25 pounds at a year (after starting at about 5 and a half!) took the longest to drop NFs, especially early on.  I thought we'd be stuck feeding every 3 hours forever!  That being said, see if burping helps (made a huge difference with mine) and give it a shot with the paci (but don't drive you and him crazy, he's still so very little!)

Morning ladies... last night was better!

He had a dream feed (although woke up) at 10:30
Then ate at 1:30, 3:30, 5 & 6:30 (I think he had the 6:30 feed, as he didn't fully 'fill up' at his 5am feed).

Improvement... I slept from 10:30 to 1:30!

I winded after each feed, but there wasn't a big burp?

Today's a new day!

Definitely progress!  I never got huge burps either, but they did sleep better when I actually did take the time to rub their backs for a bit and try to get some of it out.  Does he settle right back down after that 10:30 feed?  I had to head off that feed with my ds as he'd wake and take ages to settle again, so I did it earlier than he was waking (maybe around 10 or so) -- and after he got used to that I made it later again.  Hope your nights improve!

THanks ladies.. two steps forward, one step back.  Today is my birthday, so last night I went out to see a film.  DS has taken a bottle of expressed milk every week or so, no problem.  But last night, he point blank refused it!  Came home to a very hungry boy.

So he didn't sleep from 6pm - 10pm!!! I was dreading last night, but it wasn't too too bad.  I fed at 10:30 to bed, and then awake at 2am, 4am, 5:30 & 6:30.  My DH then took him off me, and I got to lie into 9:30!! And bizarely, DS took the defrosted bottle no problem this morning.  They ARE funny creatures, aren't they.

I think the problem with the morning cluster feeding is that I'm falling asleep mid-feed, waking 10 mins later... I'm not sure he's been latched on the whole time!! So perhaps not a proper feed.  Tonight I'll try getting out of bed and sitting in a chair to feed, so that he takes a full feed.

Thanks everyone for your support!

It's so hard when you're super tired, I often dozed off too and then you have no idea how long they've been nursing when you wake up!  Sitting up will help with that!  Funny about the bottle, though my girls both pulled that trick too!
