Three Steps Back?
« on: May 21, 2012, 17:49:05 pm »
Hello everyone,

This is my first time posting here and I have to say this forum has been a lifesaver for me!

I have been practicing the EASY routine for about two weeks with my 11 week old.  His naps were all over the place, some days he would nap too long, some days not nap at all and he would wake up frequently at night.  When I heard about the EASY routine, it all made sense. When we started following it and logging all of my son's mealtimes and naps everything started settling into place.  My baby wasnt as fussy and started sleeping 5-6 hour stretches at night!

But then, about a week ago, he started waking up at 300-330am every night and then again about 530am.  He seems to still be really tired and isnt hungry at the 530 feeding, so im not sure what I should do? Get up or put him back down?  My husband and I looked over his log sheets and my husband feels like I am putting him down too early at night (usually around 8-830pm and then wake him up for his dreamfeed at about 11pm) but how can I tell my baby not to be tired?

Please advise on what I could be doing wrong!

Hi there and welcome to BW! :)

There is usually a growth spurt right around 12 weeks, so I'm guessing that could be a big factor in his increased NWs. How do you feed him, by breast or formula?

Secondly, I doubt you are putting him down too early at night.  In fact, I'm guessing he might be going down a bit late, by the behavior you're describing (still seeming really tired, not really hungry). Often when babies are kept up too late or haven't napped enough in the day, they become overtired and actually sleep more fitfully and wake earlier.  I definitely would try to get him back to sleep at 5:30 am by using shh/pat or whatever you use to calm him and settle him to sleep. Would you mind posting the last few days of your EASY routine, so we can take a look?

Something like this:
Wake and eat 7 am
A
S 8:30 am
E 10 am
A
S 11:30 am
Etc etc...

Agree with Katie's advice :) Also just wanted to point out for you that ideally a baby has a 12hr night and a 12hr day, so if he's waking at 6am, he should be asleep in bed by 6pm. Most babies work best with a 7am-7pm day...
