Baby not hungry for first morning feed - any idea why?
« on: June 02, 2012, 19:56:09 pm »
My 3.5 month old DS seems to love eating (EBF) around the 3-3.5h EASY clock EXCEPT for his first feed in the morning (7am).  He just turns away like food is the absolute least of his interests even if he hasn't eaten since 1am and even if I keep him in a dark non-stimulating environment.  (To note - he is already huge - doubled his birth weight about 1 week ago).

Any thoughts on what might be up?  Is this a common issue for people?  What should I be trying to fix this?  I would much rather he eat properly at this time than wake through the night (obviously ;-)

Should I be denying feeds during the night even though he downs a full meal when I do let him eat?

Thanks for your thoughts!

At that age, I wouldn't recommend trying to drop a NF (if he dropped it himself with no intervention, that's a different story).  How many feeds is he having overnight?

One of my LOs was always like these - by the time she was 9mths old and STTN she would still refuse her morning feed and have one at 10am ish. She didn't eat much solids then either so it really was 15 ish hours from her last feed.

She just HATES eating in the morning! She likes a drink of water when she gets up these days.

In my case it was just a preference/ personality thing.

Thank you both so much!

Things do seem to change on a nightly basis, but last night for example he ate at 10:30pm and then at 4:30am (I call this a good night), then at 7:00am not hungry...  But the night before it was eating at 10:00pm, 12:30am and then still not hungry at 7:00am.

Thanks Liz for letting me know that I am not the only one!!!  I just assumed all babies "should" be hungry for first feed!
