6 mo...best way to wean?
« on: June 05, 2012, 07:53:05 am »
hi,hope i'm posting this in the right place-apologies if not!I'm just looking for some advice on how best to wean my 5mo from breast to bottle.i aim to start weaning when she is 6mo. I have been expressing lots,so have plenty of breastmilk frozen, and she happily takes a full bottle feed if i have to be away from her (i have only ever missed 1 feed at a time & not on a regular basis). i read somewhere that it is important to do the night feed as this is what stimulates milk production...is this right?at the moment, these are her feedings:
07.30, 11.00, 2.30, 5.30, 7.30 & dreamfeed @ 10.30pm.  what would be the best one to swap for a bottle initially? the breastfeeding has gone so well for me so i really want to do my best to make her transition to bottles as easy as possible.

A lot of people use a bottle for the DF anyway, so that might be a good one to start with.  I've been led to believe that the more "comfort" like feeds are the harder ones to switch (so WU and BT) so might be worth leaving them until last.

Are you planning on giving solely EBM by bottle or formula or a mixture?  Are you switching because you're going back to work or something?

thanks for the advice!would truly love not to be the one doing the dreamfeed!!!i'm a morning person-i'd happily go to bed at 9pm-opposite to hubby!!!
not back to work for a while, but i don't want to rush the weaning.tbh,i hadn't planned on keeping going for so long!it kind of happened by accident!i will eventually use formula, but in no rush to move her on from ebm.i'm happy to pump for the next couple fo months anyway&wean her gradually over to all formula.i've been very lucky with my lo realy-i managed early on to keep to a 3 hr easy & we're now on 3.5 hr,so hoping she doesn't associate feeding with her sole method of comfort.

You'll find other ways to comfort.  Just seems that some babies are most attached to those feeds.

I'd say df first, then daytime ones, followed by wake up and bed time feeds -- but theres really no rules governing it.  You'll also want to wait about a week between dropped feeds so you don't get engorged.
Sounds like you're doing great!  :)

I'd only pump if you're engorged so you don't get mastitis, and then don't pump until empty (since that tells your body to produce more milk) but just enough to reduce the engorgement.  Enjoy the extra sleep!  :)
