Weaning final feed (22 month old)
« on: June 21, 2012, 09:34:22 am »

Hello,

I have been working on weaning my 22 month old off breastfeeding over the last few weeks.  As of yesterday we are down to just the morning feed.  She quite happily got rid of the bedtime feed when I offered her milk in a beaker while reading stories.  I think part of this was that I never really got into the habit of feeding her to sleep thanks to the bw!  She was attached to her afternoon feed and asking for the feed usually happened when we arrived home from nursery or other activity. In order to break this routine I talked about her having a special treat as we were driving home and then gave the treat to her as soon as we walked into the door.  This seemed to make her forget about asking for milk.

I just wondered if anyone has any good ideas about weaning the morning feed?  I think it will be much harder to use distraction as I can't step in and put other thoughts into her mind before she remembers that she wants milk because it is typically the first thing that she says when I walk in the room in the morning.  I have tried offering her milk in a beaker but she has refused.  Her language is pretty good but I am not sure that she will buy into an explanation (e.g. mummy's milk is all gone, tired, etc) especially at that vulnerable/waking up time of the day.

Any ideas or tips would be much appreciated!  Many thanks!

Distraction with a fun breakfast ready as soon as she gets up?

Could someone else get her up in the morning for a bit until you've dropped the feed and you see her downstairs ready for breakfast?
