Breasts different- is it possible?
« on: July 12, 2012, 01:32:55 am »
DS2 seems to prefer my left breast.  When I bring him to the right, he will latch on, but bob on and off, choke, sputter, arch his back.  On the left, there is no issue.  He could stay there for days!  If I lay down with him, he has no problem nursing on the right side.

Is it possible to have a faster letdown on one side?  I don't remember having this issue with DS1, but it has been a while!

I had a similar issue with DD and it ended up that she had a minor torticollis. Just went to the osteopath to fix it.  Really nothing major, but she was uncomfortable on one side a bit.

Could be just preference though I'm sure.

I was seeing a LC for something else, and she's the one who noticed it. I think to check for torticollis you have to check if they can fully move their head both sides without having to turn their body as well.

I had and still have this issue - one of my breasts has lots of little holes and the other has two big ones... one's a nice spray and the other is like a fire hose on the back of the throat :P Only discovered it when I was hand expressing.

Thanks Ladies :)

Elise- I did think of that, but I have been watching him and he has a good range of motion.  I will definitely as the doctor at his check up next week, though.

Bec- I am going to try hand expressing today to see if that is the case.  I am glad to hear that I am not the only one!

I def. think a preference is common and there can be differences in each breast. Both of my kids have had a preference for the right side and I noticed that it seems to come out in more of a clean stream while the left just drips downward. I think its pretty normal, just like how they are rarely the same size. I think your supply will adjust to the preference, but I really wouldn't worry if your LO seems full after a feed!

mine both had a marked pref for the LHS. Turns out (I found out afterwards during US exam of my breasts for fibroadenomas) that I have very twisted milk ducts on my right so the flow wasn't as fast as the left for my babies....with emma it was definately a more marked issue but we had it both times. Both of them ONLY fed from the left from around the 14 ish month mark....gave up completely on the right for the last 4 ish months of feeding before they self weaned...

All my LOs had a side preference, and it wasn't always the same side!  FWIW, I have a preference too as to which side is more comfortable for me, and I'm sure that makes them more comfortable (I prefer the left and both DS1 and DD prefer that side).  Interestingly I have also had the left nipple pierced in the past to the milk actually does flow a lot faster, which might influence their preference as well.

I always thought this was why mine preferred the left as well as hearing my heartbeat...but it turns out there was a physical reason as well. I always preferred the left as it meant my right hand was free to do other things like flick a book for Oscar, play playdough, text someone etc etc....

Mine have had side preferences as well and I've noticed while pumping that the flow is different.

DS2 has a preference, my other 2 never did.  I notice that is the side that I pump the least out of and it is the side that in the beginning hurt SO bad whenever DS latched on.  I did take DS2 to a chiropractor to see if there was any reason why he wasn't going to that side.  I also think that side is way more forceful of a letdown
