Need help putting my 9mo on EASY!
« on: August 15, 2012, 13:18:02 pm »
Can someone help me?
(Forgive my english, I’m from Brazil)
My baby is almost nine months. I put him on EASY with 6 months old and it was perfect, until we traveled for 3 days. Since we came back, I’ve been trying to put him on EASY without success. Until yesterday he wasn’t quite on EASY, but it was almost there. Yesterday he started giving some trouble to eat (solids, including, which he never did) and at 7 pm I did what I do every night to make him sleep but it was worthless. I tried PU/PD, but everytime I put him in the crib, he started crawling. After almost 40 minutes trying (and a lot of screaming) I gave up. We went to watch some tv in the living room and I put him in the crib when he was almost sleeping. Today he did the same and one more time I gave up. I don’t know what to do. I don’t know anymore if it was the trip, or if it are his teeth or the fact that he learned how to stand in the crib. I’m desperate. How can I put him on EASY?
And I almost forgot. When I try to put him to sleep he is so tired that he sleeps while changing, but 1 minute after I put him in the crib he is total alert.

Since we came back from the trip, his EASY was:
E 05:00 200ml of milk (sleeping)
07:00 (he usually wakes)
E 07:30 200ml of milk
A until 09:00
S 09:15- 10:15
E 11:00 Soup (a really big plate)
A until 13:00
S 13:15- 14:45
E 15:00 Fruit with milk
A 18:15 Soup (a really big plate)
S 19:30

I could imagine this is not any longer a result of the trip.
If he started all of a sudden to refuse milk and the solids it could be that he is teething and it's too painful. If it is that then it should all go back on track in a few days. His nappies are still ok? Wet and dirty?
Is it new that he is crawling? This new skill can mess up with sleep big time! And that should as well become better within time (there's not much you can do about it, it's just the course of nature).
It could also be SA (separation anxiety), do you see any different behavior during the day? Like he doesn't want you to go away or he wants to see you all the time?

IMO your main problem is your A time. Right now you have two As during the day that are 2.15h and the third one before BT which is 4.54h. 2.15h would be way too little for a baby his age and 4.45 would be way too long. Have a look at this link: http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=164030.0 you should be aiming to have him on around 3.5h A pretty much throughout the day, so you don't have these big differences between earlier As and later once. Right now I could imagine that he gets to BT completely OT because he was awake for so long (and also didn't have proper sleep during the day, 1h naps wouldn't be quite enough and indicate UT) and he is so so tired he can't shut his eyes in the crib and peacefully go to sleep.
IIWY I'd be working on upping the first two As and reduce the one before BT and you should see a progress already with just that.
HTH for now, let me know how you are doing.

Thank you very much!
I do think it has something to do with the fact that he started crawling a week ago, but I don't think it is the only factor (at least I hope it isn't, otherwise there's nothing I can do about it). Tomorrow I'll try to start extending gradually his As, but I have one question: Since he is still eating within 3 hours (I tried to make it 4 hours, but since he doensn't accept the dream feed, he started waking up at night), if I up the first 2 As, he will go to sleep pretty close to the time his supposed to eat. Won't this disturb his sleep? Should I give him some snacks before he sleeps?

Are you BF or FF?
If you are FF and he started waking at night I don't think it's hunger related but the OT. For FF babies, at 9m to eat every three hours is a lot.
In any case, when are you giving solids? You could give them say an hour before the nap and that should last him.

FF. Ok, thank you very much  ;D, I'll try upping his As (to 3.5h) and his Es (to 4 h) and I'll let you know how I'm doing.

OMG. I'm desperate. I really want to put him on EASY, but I'm almost giving up completely. The last 5 times I put him in the crib, he scream out loud continuously for 40 minutes. He`s constantly trying to stand up in the crib and when I try to lay him down, he starts screaming and crying very loud. I don't think I can take it anymore. The first time I put him on EASY it wasn't like this. It is normal? Should I insist? It is going to be better anytime soon?

I'm really happy right now. I managed to up his first 2 As today and reduce his last A and removed everything from the crib. After only 8 minutes (without crying) he was sleeping. I hope it stays that way.   :)

I think these moments are very important to remember because you will have hard moments and sleep training is never easy, yk? Especially the first days because things are different than what they used to be and he doesn't understand why.
If he is learning how to pull himself now then it could disrupt sleep as well...
I personally found that once DS could pull himself and stand in the crib sleep training was so much easier. By then pat/shh didn't work anymore and PU/PD was so difficult because of the lifting. When he pulled himself there was no more PU just PD and that was easier for me. I also wore ear plugs because of the screaming :(
