I have always gone out for the day with both of mine age 3 and 18 months. Like others have said I want to give them a variety of activities and I hate staying in all day! I do have some days at home and they will take a nice lunchtime nap. When we are out and about I really don't worry about the sleep as I know they will sleep in the buggy or car if they are really tired. Just do what makes you feel happy. It's definitly good to get them so if you have the odd trip out it really won't mess with the whole sleep thing as bad as you might think

I think as they age the occasional fun activity/ unique life experience begin to take precedence over nap. We don't do it often and when we do we do an early BT, each time it's been worth it and it doesn't upset things as bad as I anticipate! Have fun!
^^ this
. I am queen of the obsessive cot nap, but after our hol I realized Z can now cope with the odd car nap day ;) I just make sure he gets an op to nap in the car/buggy at some point really. Worst case and you get 30 mins an EBT will likely give you a mega night ;)

Z is touchy with sleep, and spirited so not a good combo, but he was fine really.. Give it a go Hun and see how he is :)

C has been a champ this week. She NEVER naps in the buggy and car naps are a bit hit and miss but usually 40 mins only but she has surprised us all this week.

Monday- car nap 40 mins max. Bedtime was a nightmare but this was because we were staying in a new hotel and she decided to spend 2 hours :o practising saying all the words she has ever learned in little funny chunks, e.g. Poo, wee, nappy, bin, bleurgh!

Tuesday- 1hr nap in the pushchair. Settled to bed in 10 mins. STTN for 12hours!!!! :o

Wednesday- 30 min nap in the pushchair. Settled to bed in 15 mins. STTN for 12 hours again!! :o

This is actually much better than her napping 1.5hrs at home and then fighting BT for 45 mins every nigth and doing an 11hr nighter!!! ::)

Isn't it amazing when they pleasantly surprise us! I'm so glad that you're enjoying your vacation and that your LO is doing so well! Enjoy!!!

Update:

We finally managed a day out  ;D

DS did not sleep in the buggy  :( However, he stayed in it lying down and resting for about 1 hour before I let him out again  :)

He had a fun day and didn't show any signs of being tired, until he nodded off in the car on the way home for 20min  ;) I put him down for an EBT and let him nap an extra 45min the following day, which I don't think he needed tbh!

He's been happy and showed no-ill effects or temperment issues from the missed nap.

Now he's nearly 2yo he seems to be doing better on a 1-3pm nap, so I'm shifting him to that from 12.30 - 2.30. He's still STTN from 7pm - 7.45am pretty much. And yes, I know how lucky we are!!

We're off on holiday for 4 days to the Isle of Wight the week after his birthday, so I'm more confident we can go out and do more things now  :D

Ah this sounds like our outing on O's birthday last week!  Except he didn't even lay in the buggy - he completely refused to go in it!  We left the safari park at around 2.30pm as O was getting a bit wild & he conked out for the sum total of 15mins in the car on the way home!  Then only slept 11hrs overnight gah!

He's been happy and showed no-ill effects or temperment issues from the missed nap.
We find exactly the same with O - its kinda nice to know you can have an odd day out here & there & they can actually cope isn't it?!

Yes you are!!!  We do the same naptime 1-3 (sometimes 3.30pm), but compare your nights to ours: bedtime is 7.50pm, asleep 8.15ish, and awake the next morning anywhere from 6.30-7am.  So your DS is getting, ooh, an extra 2-2.5hrs sleep per night than mine!  :P

:) yay HH, I find they cope pretty well with the odd off day now they are abit older - and trust me my boy needs his sleep and gets cranky when OT/OT so I do get it ;)
I found when we had a week away a while back Z was fine, much better than I thought so hoping your DS is the same on your hol :-*
