Nursing Laying Down
« on: September 29, 2012, 14:44:34 pm »
Hi all! I'm new to the forum, but have been doing an EASY schedule for the past 5 weeks. This is our first hiccup so far. My LO, who is 11 weeks, has started fussing during her day feeds. She'll be fine for the WU/morning feed and the bed time feed, but only latches for a few mins during the day then starts to pull off and fuss. Then she'll be perfectly fine and nurse if I lay down with her. Is this normal? Any way to fix it? Laying down is not so easy if I'm out in public with her. The times I have had to feed her in public she'll only eat for a couple mins on each side, which worries me that she's not getting enough. I went to weigh her this week and she is gaining 8-9 oz a week still, so I know she's growing well. I just didn't know if there is something I could do to help the laying down issue. Here is our EASY:

WU/E: 8am
A
S: 9

E: 11
A
S: 12:15ish

E: 2
A
S: 3:30

E: 5
A
S: 6:15

E: 8
BT/S: 9

DF: 10:30

E: 4am (some nights she goes without)

Should I start extending her to a 3.5 hour EASY? Maybe she's not hungry enough when I feed? Any advice is welcomed!

Thanks!

Well your routine looks great. Personally I wouldn't stretch her feeds yet as she is so you and sleeping well.
Is it literally 2 or 3 mins she is feeding for or could it be 5-6mins? They do get much more efficient at feeding as the approach 3mo so it could just be that she is done and getting enough. Mine were both down to 6 mins total for most feeds by your DS's age.
It could be that she is more tired at the WU and BT feeds and that is why she takes longer to feed. And the for morning feed she is probably very hungry when she skips the 4am feed.
Do you have a feeding pillow at all? I find mine invaluable even feeding a 1yo. It allows him to lay perfectly horizontal at the right height to feed with little effort from me. I always struggled getting a good position without it. I have a Widgey one which I love since it is overstuffed and so supportive. Some of the others I tried weren't high enough and not as firm.
Could you have an overactive let down that means laying down makes it easier for her to feed? Just an idea in case none of the other things I've mentioned grab you.
It doesn't sound to me like she isn't getting enough to eat at all. Well done mama :)

^ This. If this is the case, you could try leaning back in a chair to feed. I have even laid on my back on a hill in a park :P

They do get much more efficient at feeding

Thanks for the replies! I think this might be the case combined with a forceful let down. I pulled her off today right as my milk let down and it was shooting out. I think it's just a lot for her to take in, because I have noticed after reading through some of the other posts that she does pull off and cough or sputter....which in turn makes her mad.

She is feeding for about 5-10 mins per side. It's just so much less than she was I was concerned. I'm sure all new mommas go through that...more than once! Haha

I do! I have actually forgotten about it, but I might pull it out again and give it another try!

I did this today and it seemed to help! It was much easier on me on my back than laying on my side. She was kind of confused at first, but quickly caught on.

Thanks for putting my concerns to rest and for all the advice!

It does sound like she is getting more efficient coupled with an OALD. You can also let her pull off and catch the first sprays of milk in a cloth and put her back on once the flow has slowed.

I hope it all helps :)
