quick someone help! can I take this med?
« on: October 18, 2012, 06:37:39 am »
It's 2:30am and I'm having an awful allergic reaction to something! Covered in hives, so itchy I can't sleep. The only allergy med in the house is aerius (desloratine). It says not advised for nuring women. I just fed dd and am desperate. I will probably feed her again in 3-4hrs.  Can someone quickly find out if I can take it?

If you are desperate - take it. Te amount that comes through your milk in 3/4 hrs will be minimum. I give my DS Aerius sometimes and have done from the age of 2 so it can't be that harmful. Bubba shouldn't even be sleepy as if I remember correctly it does not make you drowsy.

Is it the same as this - Desloratadine (Clarinex)?  If so, according to Kellymom it comes in the L2 (safer) category, but I guess you've probably either taken it or not by now.  Hope you're not itchy anymore

Yes, that's the one.  Thanks for your replies!  Actually, by the time I stripped my bed of all the sheets and bedding (in the motn :P), I started to be less itchy so I thought I'd play it safe and not take it.  I was still a bit itchy for the rest of the night, but not too bad.  It was a horrible night though.  :(  I felt so sick this morning from lack of sleep (and not even due to children for once! ::)) that DH took DS2 to work with him and I slept all morning while DD napped.  I hope it doesn't happen again, but if it does I'm taking the meds!

For future reference, kellymom has a great "is this safe while breastfeeding?" section

Yeah, I was just on my phone and wasn't going to navigate an unfamiliar website from it, so thought I'd ask here instead!  :)

From what I have heard allergy medicines are generally safe while nursing, what happens is it diminishes your supply a bit.  So, if you have good supply and can build it up again over the next few days you should be good.  Good luck....hope it doesn't happen again!
