How to get on schedule when baby has gas
« on: October 09, 2012, 13:17:24 pm »
My 3mo DS has been a short napper from day one.  He suffers from gas cramps, and it wakes him frequently.  I tried to get him on the E.A.S.Y schedule, but it wasn't working.  I know you're supposed to address the problems before an E.A.S.Y routine will work for your baby.  Now my doctor suggested I nurse my DS more frequently to help reduce gas, which I tried (since nothing else was working), and now I have the same problems, except my DS eats every 1.5 to 2hrs.  Do I just keep waiting for this phase to pass before I sleep train or is thre something else I can do now to get him on track?

How are you feeding him? How are his poos?
If BF, what are your letdown and supply like? Reflux or oversupply/ overactive letdown?
If bottle fed, are you still using the slowest teat? Might be worth playing around with that.

I'm not sure I subscribe to the thought that gas is a phase, its something that can be helped at any age and having BTDT with the screaming baby with terrible gas, feeding more frequently just made it worse :(

I BF him.  I have a fast let down, but he's a great feeder, much better than my older des was.  I always stop and burp him properly.

Are you lying back to feed? Or sitting him up? http://www.biologicalnurturing.com/
That can help... as can gas drops in some babies, didn't really help DS.

I tried both sitting up and lying back.  I use the gas drops, but think it's more to make me feel like I'm doing something to help him.

What I'd suggest in terms of getting him used to a routine and keeping him well rested, is to do an EASY routine without the independent sleep, just until you've got the gas issues sorted out. DS slept on my til 3.5-4 months and because he was well rested and used to the routine, it literally took 2-3 days to sleep train. The only change in his life was sleeping in the cot instead of on me for naps. He slept in the cot at night and was used to sleeping at those times, etc.

Could it be more than gas, since none of the usual fixes seem to be helping? Any sypmtoms here ring bells: Reflux 101 - General reflux information
