6 wk don't understand his naps help please
« on: October 19, 2012, 17:05:35 pm »
Hi all

I'm a ftm and have a little boy called Ethan who is six weeks old. I've been reading through advice on here regarding routines and sleeping but I'm struggling to understand Ethan's daytime naps and wondering what I'm doing wrong.

I'm trying to establish a routine trying being the highlighted word here :-) but basically I am aiming to get Ethan up around the 7 mark for his bottle which I'm currently making 5oz and he takes from 4-nearly 5oz then dressed for the day and some play with him then showing signs for sleep around 1.5hr after getting up I try puting him down in Moses basket in sleepy state and then ssssh/pat to sleep whilst this works he wakes every 10 to say 30mins. I stay with him often to say 45mims but through this time he continues to wake. If I walk away he still wakes, sometimes he can go back to sleep before I get to him or crys and I can sssh him back. Before I no it its bottle time again and we've sat in a sleep wake sleep wake nap. At night he is better and will sleep between bottles quiet well although still thinks its wakey wakey time after the early hrs bottle around 4ish but were slowly getting this shorter and short.

So basically what's going wrong in the day am I expecting to much does a baby need to sleep solid/unbroken or do babies go in and out of sleep in the day it's just I can't get anything done, get ready to go out have a nap myself make and eat lunch because he goes in and out instead of just nappin or a solid hr or so. How much should a baby I his age be napping in one go during the day?

Any advice tip or suggestions would be greatly appreciated please
Regards
Rebekah very confused first time mummy xx

Hello and welcome to the site - congrats on your new baby!

Have you read Tracy's books - are you familiar with the EASY routine at all?

I think you may be keeing him up for too long, if you shorten his A time a bit it should help! The average A time for 4-6 weeks is 60-75 mins so if he is waking at 7 then you want him asleep again by about 8/ 8.15, poor naps are usually because of too much or too little A time so they get over tired or are under tired.

Have a look at these links they should help!

chronological EASY samples, 0-3 months
Starting EASY - all you need to know and more!

Thanks Laura that's been a great help. To be honest when pregnant I was given tons of different books from well meaning family and friends but think I've read too much and too many and completely confused myself. My sister in law told me about baby whisperer and have me above that she had used with her now 6 and nearly 4yr olds. So I wanted to try the easy routine with Ethan just waiting on the book to come as my sis in law couldn't find hers so it was more just verbal advice that de could remember.
I actually thought Ethan was 'bored' and that I wasn't doing enough with him in the A time and that's why he wasn't napping haha couldn't have been more wrong hey Ethan was at time up from 7-9am son that's clearly waaaaaaay too long for his age. However without knowing a lot about the EASY routine prior to reading advice an other posts on this forum we were using a type of EASY anyway as I'd feed then change burp and play then try and get him to nap but that is where we fell apart. But as he's jst over six weeks if seems perfect to follow and properly understand the EASY routine now
Thanks again
Rebekah xx

You're welcome!

I hope you get to read the books soon - it does help everything to make more sense, you'll be glad you found us ;)

Remember to enjoy your new bundle though and getting into the pattern you did is a fab start for you both!

This is a good place to post in - lots of mums at the same stage you are! Newborn - 3 Months: Part 45
