Night from hell - rolling all the time and weaning the swaddle
« on: October 25, 2012, 22:28:20 pm »
Got some great advice from Bec the other day and as he is rolling we really needed to start weaning his love me up swaddle. He has been rolling so much more the past 48hrs so we took one arm out last night. Disaster! He kept rolling over and then got stuck because his other arm was still in. Then hit the side of the cot and then hit himself in the head. He is also teething which is causing a reflux flare but it is terrible. I went in to check on him (even though he was waking every hour anyway) and he was face down in the cot! Scared me witless! So I am thinking I bite the bullet and just take both arms out for safety. He doesn't seem to be fussed about his legs in the swaddle at all so do I take both arms out of the swaddle and leave legs for now ( he is so dependent on it for his sleep cue) or do I switch to another sleeping bag or just leave legs out eventually?

Sorry for all the questions but pretty tired and not really sure which way to go. In for a rough few days I think.

With both my boys, I weaned the swaddle cold turkey.  3 horrible days/nights, but then things went back to 'normal'.

HTH!

Remind me how old he is again?
You can swaddle with just his legs in the swaddle -- I did find it was harder to keep together that way and we ended up with loose blankets.  A sleeping bag works just as well as a sleep cue and I think it feels similar to the swaddle on their legs (or you could also wrap a small blanket around his legs inside the sleeping bag, that way the blanket won't end up loose in the crib).

Thanks ladies. Erin he is 7 months on the dot! The swaddle he is in turns into a sleeping bag but I just had his arms out and he got his legs stuck in the cot side earlier. Think I will either move him into a traditional sleeping bag or just leave him free. The thought of transitioning to another sleeping bag that I then need to get rid of might be easier to just do all of it now. He had an ok nap this morning with both arms out. He seems to like being on his tummy.

FWIW, when dd1 started rolling onto her sleep, the ped told me that after 6 months, if they can get there, they're ok to stay there (once you wean the swaddle of course).  I definitely agree about going straight to the sleeping bag -- mine all turned into tummy sleepers once they could roll anyway, just liked it better I guess.  :)
