Angel baby getting more spirited...
« on: October 27, 2012, 23:25:49 pm »
Does this happen, personalities change as they get older? Stan was/is/has always been almost completely textbook, just a bit touchy about sleep. Audrey was always angel with a little bit of textbook but she is getting more and more spirited! She is such good fun but SO determined, SO driven, so hilarious and really pretty intense in everything she does - her voice is LOUD... hehe love her to pieces but I am starting to get a bit nervous about the toddler years, she's not going to be so easy to distract/redirect as Stan was...

Emma was a total angel compared to Ozzie early on...all that changed around the year mark. She always had spirited qualities but now just has some angel wings left...

My angel/textbook DD started showing her spirited streak around the year mark. She still is mostly angel/textbook out and about and in school it's just at home that spirited streak likes to show itself ::).

I think it's a girl thing as much as a spirited thing though, my angel/ textbook boy didn't develop the spirited bit!

Add Megan to the other spirited madam with an older brother pile  ;). Def has an angel streak - but I think just having to fight her corner has caught her she needs to be far more determined than her brother was. And I would def NOT call Jacob textbook, he is an odd, complicated hybrid of alsorts  ::).

I def think they can change as they get older. I mean a sleepy baby wouldn't always stay sleepy and quiet for always yk??

I actually don't believe that temperament is really something that changes. Personality does, yes. But at this age, their personalities are not fully developed yet.  The categories that Tracy uses for babies of angel, spirited, touchy, textbook are not personality, rather they are temperament.

Your temperament is not learned, it is innate and you are born with it - it is aspects like if you are relaxed or not, if you withdraw from a new situation or approach it eagerly, the intensity of your emotions, how sensitive you are, how persistent you are.

Personality is something that you must nurture and develop, and is affected by your education and socialisation. Your behaviour, our thoughts and feelings, how you express yourself, etc.

Your temperment is the foundation for who you are, your personality is built on top of that.  I would say that it is unlikely that she is changing her temperament, more that she is starting to develop her own personality.    It also could be that you didn't notice some things when she was younger or maybe interpreted them differently?

I don't think there is any reason to fear or worry about a spirited toddler. I do feel people tend to label them as a handful and being more difficult than other children, but I don't really believe that is accurate!  My DS was, from about 13m to a few months shy of 3yo the BEST child ever, so easy to get along with, a really good little boy who didn't cause problems, get into trouble, distracted easily when I wanted him to, did what he was asked to, followed the rules, etc etc etc. But he was still very much a spirited child!  And at 3yo when things started getting harder, I would not say that it was his temperment or even his personality but more just the fact that he was 3!!

Honey, Sam has gone from Angel to Textbook/spirited and Spirited as far as the 'Raising Your Spirited Child' is concerned. Finding this out was a revelation and explained a lot and has given me the chance to learn about him (start learning). Having a spirited child IMHO is challenging but they also have wonderful attributes that other LO's don't. In the book Mary talks as though all 'Spirited' Children' are that way from birth, which frustrates me a little  >:(
