MPI and eggs
« on: November 05, 2012, 14:52:44 pm »
For those of you that had LO's that were MPI, did you wait a long time before introducing eggs?

My DS is 11 months old and already on a VERY limited diet due to a lack of enzymes. We *think* he is MPI although I can't be 100% sure now that I know he had that enzymatic condition, it could have been what was causing problems all along. But I'm not trying dairy yet, but the nutritionnist said we should wait until 18 months to introduce eggs because of the allergy risk because he is MPI. Is that commonly done? Introducing eggs would be wonderful for us since he has such a limited diet, but of course I don't want to introduce them too early and end up with an allergy.

So I guess I was just curious to see what people do?

We did try them at around 12 months and they really didn't agree but now at 2 he's fine with them - might be one if those try it and see situations!

Thanks Rach. Wondering though if introducing early puts him at risk to develop a true allergy? He tested negative ige to dairy.

Haven't had any formal testing so really couldn't comment on that!

Hi Elise my hubby gave Euan an egg 4 weeks ago and we have MPI here and we had a full anaphylactic shock :-(  and now have EPi Pens etc  :(
Am not saying this is going to happen but maybe giving something with egg product rather than the egg would give you and indication of whether he can tolerate it or not iykwim

Not sure about whether or not introducing them too early increases the risk of an allergy - think they are either allergic or not although I have no educational back round to this so just my thoughts .

Hope your little man continues to do well with his diet and that now you know what is wrong that things start to go easier for you all xxx

my ped nutritionist told us that eggs are not considered a dairy protein (they used to be but new research shows that they are different).  my DS cannot tolerate milk in any form but he is fine with eggs (although his reactions are GI not anaphlatctic).

F is MPI although slowly growing out of it, and has always been fine with eggs too - we introduced them cautiously at around 7.5/8 months with no problems. xx

That is what I was thinking, eggs aren't dairy.  DD2 still can't handle dairy, but she can finally tolerate egg baked into things, which makes being gluten free that much easier on us.  On a side note, I held off feeding egg to DD1 until she was over 12 months and she was fine, but by the time DD2 came around "they" said to feed allergenic stuff earlier, so at 7 months she had her first bit of egg and her first reaction (thankfully just hives and a bad stomach ache).

Hi, maybe start with well cooked egg yolk as the chances of an allergy are less than the white.
