EASY with a BF 4 week old
« on: November 12, 2012, 18:41:11 pm »
I have been unsuccessfully trying to get my DS on EASY since early days. He's now 4 weeks old.

At the moment DS seems to want to feed every hour to hour and a half, dozes off on the breast but if I put him down he can't sleep for more than about 15 mins, starts screaming and rooting so I feed him again...vicious circle! The dummy sometimes helps him get off to sleep but then I don't know if I'm missing his hunger cues, or perhaps the dummy is making him feed less efficiently which is why he needs to feed so often. Not really sure how to break the cycle. The good news is that he does seem to sleep for a good 3 or 4 hour stretch at night time, which is a lot more than he ever manages in the day. However this is only after an evening of overtired screaming after which he eventually passes out!

I've tried doing E,A then the 4S wind-down but he really fights sleep and we can never seem to get to the S without an E! He always wakes up after 10-15 mins or at best 40 mins. Also he seems to be happy to be awake for ages, sometimes an hour or two, and then starts screaming without giving any tired signs first. by then the only way to calm him is to feed him again.

Could there be a BF problem here? he feeds for around 20 mins and does seem to be drinking, but sometimes just plays with my nipple, coming on and off and seeming frustrated. Or could he have wind or reflux which is why he wakes so quickly and finds it so hard to get to sleep?

thanks for any advice!

When he comes off, I presume you try burping to see if you can dislodge any wind?

How long has he been feeding every hour/90 minutes?

In the early weeks it's really easy to confuse cues.  Wind looks so much like hungry and tired can be really difficult to spot until after it's too late.  Do you know what sort of temperament he is?  That can make a huge difference too.

Are you getting plenty of wet/dirty nappies?  Are there any other signs that are making you question reflux? (Reflux 101 - General reflux information)

I see you've already had some help from the EASY ladies.

You might want to check this out too -- frequent feedings can be normal in the early days.
Breastfeeding and EASY in the first few weeks
I would definitely check out the reflux link too and see if anything rings a bell.
