Help with my 13 week old short nap times
« on: December 26, 2012, 22:55:43 pm »
Hi could I ask where you think I'm going wrong  ??? ??? As DS is unable to sleep for longer then 30min.
(currently going through what I think is teething and growth spurt so the below easy is a rough average as each day is never the same)

Eat 7am
A
S 8.30 (tired by 8 only nap I can lay him down and he takes himself off with no fuss)
( extra A as he rarely gets past 9 ever unless I take him in bed with me then he will sleep till 10)
E 10
A
S ( haven't quite figured this one out as his wake up times are always so different but I try to get him down 1.5hr after wake up but this could be as early as 10.30 which means he ends up feeding to sleep.
A
S ( i then try for another nap 1.5hr after wake up as he will have only had 20min previously)
E 1
S 2-4 ( rarely happens but goes down at 2 and has an hour sometimes I can settle him again for a bit longer.
A
S 5/6 half hour naEp
A 6.30 bath
E 7  he feeds to sleep)
S 8 fast asleep in bed

Now before 12 weeks we did let him sleep after 8 as df wasn't working for us and we got a few days of just a 1am wake up feed. But then it all went to pot and he now wakes up anytime between 10 and 11.30 and 1 or 2 then between 3 -7 he just struggles in a restless sleep.

Any ideas??

P.s he is ebf a healthy big weight and sleeps in his cot for the first part of the night then I move him to his crib by me when he wakes also now resorted to bringing him in with us in the early hours where he sleeps soundly!

Hi

30 min naps are classic OT naps. I'm a bit confused by your posted easy. Are all naps 30 min or do you extend them? Aveage a times at 13 wo are 1h20-30 min. if your first a is 1h30 and giving a 30 min OT nap then I would shorten it to 1h20 min to see if u can get a better nap. Hold on this at for a few days to see if lo adjusts to it. also After a short nap I would shorten the next a by 15-20 mins to try to stop OT accumulating.

Try to keep days to 12h as Los generally do better on a 12h day night routine and re fts once fed you could do a quick nappy change so lo isn't fds as a prop...same with co sleeping if you wan lo to sleep independantly he should really spend whole night where he first falls asleep. But hopefully once naps are sorted so will nws so one step at a time! Hth!

Oh no he doesn't come in bed with me just into his crib in our room when he wakes for a feed.
The problem I find with the 12hr days is he won't take a feed any early then 7. His bedtime works for us at the moment as he baths and feeds by 7 then is asleep by 8 at the latest.

I try to extend his naps when he wakes but he gets so fustrated which is why we are having more of an EASASAE !

He is very clear with his ques right at 1hr 15min after woken so I scoop him up cuddle sing lay him down and he sucks his hand then sleeps.
At night he can get himself back to sleep but in the day we never get past the 1hr mark.

If you're getting 30 min OT naps at 1h30 am at then I would decrease first at to 1h20 as I suggested before.

If you're getting 1h naps then that's UT and you could try extending a times. Or is that 1hr after resettling? It sounds like he's doing well falling asleep independantly so it may just be developmental in that lo can't transition between sleep cycles yet. in that case you can try extending naps for a week leaving one nap and see if lo can transition alone. If not use w2s for another week and see..

How do I address habitual wakings? (wake-to-sleep and other methods)

Also, have a look at the faq pages there is tons of info there! Hth!
