6 week old - 3 1& 1/2 hour naps
« on: January 10, 2013, 03:22:11 am »
I'm confused about the 3 one & half hour naps for my 6 week old.  Does this mean that throughout the day, when he has finished eating, he has activity time until his next feeding?  OR do I try to keep him up for longer and then put him down for a shorter nap?  If so, how long is the typical "shorter" nap?

Right now, he feeds every 2 & 1/2 - 3 hours, has activity time for about an hour then back down for a nap.  He usually wakes up about 1/2 an hour into his nap.  What am I doing wrong?  Thank you in advance for your advice

Hi there, basically, EASY is a cycle - eat, activity, sleep - that gets repeated throughout the day in the same order. However, when people on here talk about A times, they mean everything from when baby wakes to when they go back to sleep for the next nap, including eating.

A 30-minute nap can often mean that a baby is overtired. Have you tried to resettle him at all when he wakes? Any luck? Perhaps you could try putting him down a little earlier to see if that helps. Of course, if the nap is still short, you may end up with something more like EASAE, followed by a very short A time. Don't worry too much - keep it calm and consistent and he'll get it eventually!

I hope that helps? Good luck :)

When he wakes up, I can resettle him and put him back to bed but he's up shortly soon after.  I'll put him to bed earlier and see how that works.  Thank you for the response.

3 x 1,5 hrs naps means 3 naps that last [ideally] 1,5 hrs in each EASY cycle. So lets say your LO wakes at 7, you feed him [if BF than probably some 30 minutes or so], then you have another 30 or so minutes of awake but not feeding activity time [diaper change, little play etc.] and then you should observe your LO for tired cues- yawning, fussiness etc. At this age typical A time [feeding + play] is around 1 hr~1 hr 15 min. If you keep your LO up for too long you end up with 20~30 min nap. Some LOs nap for 45 minutes only [at this age it's pretty normal too] but anything shorter is not really a good nap.

I'd check EASY board for more ideas :)
