8mo getting his naps shorter and shorter
« on: January 07, 2013, 08:23:18 am »
My 8mo LO, who was GREAT in following the schedule ;), started rebelling! :o
He used to sleep realy well (I should have wake him up each time!) and now- hardly a 45 min. nap, 30 min. even.
His routin is this-

7am- wakes up. BF.
7:15-8:30-A
8:30- E (fruit)
9-10:30- S
10:30-12:15/12:30- A
12:30-E (vegetables)
13-15:00/15:30-S
15:30-bottle of milk
15:30-17:00-A
17-18-S
18-18:30-A
18:30-Bath+bottle of milk
19- S (all night)

The thing is, that about a month ago he started sleeping only an hour or so at noon, and lately only 30-45 min. I'm not taking him out of bed - always hoping he'll go back to sleep :P- unless he cries, what usually doesn't happen. but I know he's awake, cos he makes this cute voices :-*
During the past 3 days, he started doing that with his morning naps as well :-\ Today, for instance, I put him in bed at 9:10, and he started making voices at 9:50.
I tried WTS a few days ago: He fell asleep within 7 min. (on his own, always :)) at 13:00, I waited till 13:40, touched only his blanket, and boom- He lifts his head, all awake- Good morning, Ma! it was the best 40 min sleep ever! :D
But seriously, it is quite frastrating. he sleeps very light, so WTS is not an option, so it seems.

What do I do? ??? ??? ???

Thanks!!

It looks to me as though your LO is ready for more A time. Perhaps you could try increasing them by 5-10 minutes per day until you start getting longer naps? You may find he is ready to have two naps a day instead of three.

I don't know whether you have other demands on your time (older DCs, etc.), but if not, it might be worth a try? Good luck :)

Hi, thanx!
I do have older kids, and I need to set and take them to kindergarten, with the baby coming along, off course. by the time we get back home he's quite edgy, and I need to make his breakfast, feed him and then put him back to sleep. he looks realy tired and very happy to meet his bed while I put him there :)
So I'm not sure that extending his A time is such a good idea :( Plus, he doesn't go to sleep EXACTLY at these times I mentioned- it's always a few mins bfore or after, so how can I time that?! ???

Hmm, well he can seem tired (and he is!), but not quite tired enough to have a longer nap, iykwim? If you want to increase his A time, just make a note of when he wakes in the morning and when you put him down for his first nap, then the next day just try to increase that gap by 5 minutes or so. Perhaps keep it the same for another day or two, and if you are still getting short naps try increasing again. This should ensure that LO doesn't get OT, but is getting the right amount of A for his needs.

I know sometimes my DD (about the same age as your DS) can get a bit grouchy before it's time for her nap, but a change if scene or a walk makes her perk up a bit, so it's not that she can't handle a bit more A time.

Of course, you know your LO best and they are all different, but it might be worth a try, wdyt?
