7 mt old stopped taking full morning nap
« on: January 17, 2013, 16:19:26 pm »
My 7 mt old DS stopped taking a full morning nap about 2 weeks ago.  I think he is teething, and he has reflux, but that seems to be under control.  This used to be his EASY.

Wake at 7

E:  7:30
A:  7:00-9:00
S:  9:00-11:00

E: 11:00
A: 11:30-1:00
S: 1:00-3:00 (I always had to wake him)

E: 3:00
A: 3:30-5:00
S: 5:00-5:30 (catnap)

Awake for an hour, then bath, book, bottle, bed at 6:30-6:45.  Dreamfeed at 10:30 and he slept through.  He was pretty consistent.

Now he has started doing the 45 min thing in the morning again.  For his second nap, however, he will sleep for 3 hours and I have to wake him or he would sleep longer.  Is this okay??

I have tried decreasing his A time, increasing his A time by 5-10 min.  Not working.  He's on solids now, but I haven't tried any new foods lately.  Eating 6 oz. bottles with solids and 7 oz at bedtime and for DF.

Thanks.

I'm no pro at all! But, I would say he might need more A time in the morning to get a good nap? My 7.5 mt DD is at around 3 hour A time. However, I think as they get older and transition to one nap you want to phase out the morning nap and having one 3 hour nap in the afternoon is ideal. If he is still getting enough total naptime and sleeping at night, I would say it is probably a good thing... :)

Like PP said ;)  The average A time for a 7 month old would be around 3 hours or a little more, so that first nap is VERY early - he's definitely UT for it. So you'd probably have to increase that A time quite a bit (in 15 min increments) to get a long nap,

Alternatively, if he's not resisting the first nap, you could just let him do an UT short nap and a long pm one, maybe a bit earlier so that second A time is not so long after a short nap. Is he happy on that routine? How are his nights now - still STTN? So long as he's doing a good long pm nap, he should be getting the day sleep he needs. It's a bit of an unusual routine for his age, but if it's working for him there's nothing to fix ;)

At some point he will probably start resisting that morning nap, and/or waking earlier in the morning - which will be signs that you will have to move the morning nap later.

He is STTN but waking earlier, so I'll move it back some more.  I've been trying A time of 2 hrs 15 min, but he was still awake after 60 min again.  He's started having poo's during his am nap too, not sure how to "fix" that, so I'm just rolling with it.

As long as he's getting enough sleep during the day, I won't worry about when it is then.

Thanks!
