How do I get my baby to take a bottle again??
« on: January 08, 2013, 15:45:42 pm »
I have a 8 week old who has been slowly refusing the bottle from DH over the past several weeks. This is so disheartening to both of us.  :'( I am BFing, but want DH to be able to bond and be able to feed without a huge fight each time. There are so many other reasons too, but that's the biggest.

How do I go about getting him to accept it again?

Congrats on your LO :) I completely missed you had him!

Have you see these links? Breastfed babies and bottles

Is he taking some but not much or none at all?

He is putting up a huge fight. If he takes any at all it is only about 10 mls and then the crying begins.

Do you think it's possible that by the time the bottle is being given to him that he's just too hungry to take it?  Some people have some luck with giving a bottle either immediately after a really short BF or when LO isn't overly hungry.

No, I don't think that's it. He's barely going more than 2 hours between feeds as it is, (mostly due to short naps ::) ) so he's never really starving. Yesterday I tried a different bottle/nipple and I put the nipple in my bra for a bit (hey, trying everything here! ;) ) and I got him to almost 20 ml/1 ounce and then closer to a full ounce later on, but it was still a struggle. He either cries or just chews on it.

Are you giving EBM or formula in the bottle? DS was fussy with temperature of EBM, but some can be funny with taste of formula

DS had to have it at around body temp. Even a few degrees either way and he would refuse

C will take formula or EBM so taste doesn't bother him but like Amanda, it has to be around body temp. Too warm and he just lets it pour out his mouth and too cold and he doesn't suck the teat.

Was he taking it ok before? Apart from changing the bottle/nipple yesterday, have you always used the same one? What size nipple are you using?

<Hugs> I have ongoing problems with the bottle as well! A couple of things - have you got a teat that matches your flow? sometimes if you have a fast flow the slow flow teats can be too frustrating, also have you tried giving it to him when he's sleepy, like if ever you have to wake from a nap get straight up and give it or if you're doing a cluster or dream feed. I've tried all different teats but have actually found the short old fashioned straight up & down ones the best, the bigger flexible ones were too easy for her to just push out of her mouth & gag on.

But overall I find distraction helps which I guess is why when they're sleepy often works because they're not focussing on it. I will sometimes rock her in a chair or carry her around, jig a bit, walk from room to room, sing etc and then she starts drinking without really noticing she is IYKWIM. Its like you need to distract their mind & then their body will suck automatically. He knows how because hes done it before its just like my little monkey - now that they're older they're showing their preference.

Unfortunately I think what works for some doesn't work for others, my DD1 took a bottle fine, DD2 has been an ongoing struggle & even now I can only get a few ounces into her with distraction but we're working on it!

I hope it improves for you, its a real pain! Hang in there  :-*

Yeah I spent about £30 on teats and eventually found the one he likes and had to spend another £50 on bottles for that teat!! I'm not saying spend loads of money but maybe try out a few. We use MAM anti colic, the teats are smooth and quite soft. He wasnt keen on tommee tippee and Avent because their teats are a bit harder. It's trial and error I suppose!

How's it going? X

Hi ladies

I've been trying the Playtex Natural Nurser as I read on BabyCenter that many ppl had success with them. So far no luck, at least he's not screaming-just smiling at me and pushing/chewing it.

Will keep trying.
