9 month old couldn't settle to sleep at bedtime
« on: January 15, 2013, 14:32:07 pm »
Some background:
We've started training our DD to sleep using PUPD when she reached 4th month, and it worked like a dream. After the initiate few tough days, she had totally adapted to it. We could just do the usual sleeping rituals, put her down while she is awake, and leave the room. She would then fall asleep with no fuss at all. And after about 2 weeks, she could sleep through the night from 8pm to 7am

However, about a month later (DD was 5 months old), we went on a holiday (from Asia) to London for 2.5 weeks. Since then sleep time became a nightmare. DD is almost 9months now,  it's been 4 months since our trip and DD is still not sleeping. She's been through time of SA, teething, sickness, and also unknown reasons that make her couldn't sleep well. To cut the long story short, DD has improved a lot (from couldn't sleep without me, to waking 4-5 times at night).

The problem with bedtime now is that DD couldn't settle well at bedtime. Every night after her last feed (bf), I put her down to bed and she will toss and turn and trying to put herself to sleep. But usually after 15-30min she will wake up crying. A lot of time she will settle only when I pick her up. Then I PUPD then shhh/pat her. She will then suck her thumb, trying to put herself back to sleep, but then wake up again after 15-30min. And the whole thing repeat and repeat again for 2-3 hrs every night. From what I observe, DD is trying to put herself to sleep by sucking her thumb, toss & turning just like an adult do. But then she still can't get into deep sleep and so she cry out of frustration.

DD is doing 2 naps a day, each one is 1.5-2hr. She is sleeping absolutely fine during nap time, although might wake up once occasionally. Below is our routine:

7am             breastfeed
8 or 8:30am breakfast
9:30am        Nap (1.5-2 hr)
11:30am.     Breastfeed
12:30pm      Lunch
2pm.            Nap
3:30 or 4pm. Breastfeed
6pm.            Dinner
7pm.            Bath
7:20pm.       breastfeed and bedtime

Update:
Last night was one of the worse night!! DD was in bed at 8pm, but she struggled to get into deep sleep, and woke up every 30min. The whole "wake up crying -> PUPD - > sleep" repeat and repeat until 12:30am when she became fully awake!! I then feed her (worried that she might be too hungry to get back to sleep after all the crying). She was still very awake after feed, then I try to calm her in bed. And after playing with herself a while and some PUPD, she eventually settled in bed at 2:15am. Then woke up again at 5am. I PUPD once, and she settled back until waking up at 7am in the morning.
Sigh...I had really tough time in the past few months because of her bad sleeptime. I feel really sorry to see her struggle to sleep as she really wants to sleep well but she couldn't somehow. And she was such a good sleeper before our London trip! Poor thing. Please help!!

It sounds like she may be hitting the startings of the 2-1 nap transition and needing a little less day sleep in order to be tired enough to go to bed.  3.5-4h is a lot of day sleep for a nine month old and it may be you need to start capping one of her naps and giving her some more A time.  Have you seen this?  10/ 11mo sleep gone wonky? Read this first!

How long is it since she has gone to sleep independently?

I know 3-4 hrs nap is quite a lot for a 9 month old...I am trying to extend her A time to at least 3 hrs, and cap her nap time to 1.5hr. But she seems to get tired easily.

No sorry I meant putting her down fully awake and her setting herself to sleep without your help.  Has she ever done that?

Yes, as i mentioned in my post, when DD reached 3 month we sleep train her using PUPD. It was really successful. She can be put down fully awake and fell asleep on her own. That wonderful period last for about 2 months until our London trip jeopardized the whole sleeping thing, and she couldn't sleep independently like that since then. When we were in London, it was all accidental parenting (co-bed, nurse to sleep, hold to sleep) as she couldn't sleep at all, maybe due to the new environment.

I think I would start cutting back on one of her naps - choose which one you would prefer to keep as the long nap and then start cutting the other one.  I'd start perhaps by limiting the shorter nap to an hour and aiming for a 12h day.  Hopefully that should mean she is more tired and easier to settle with PUPD at night.  Is she pulling to stand yet?  If she is, you no longer PU but wait for her to pull up and cry, then just lie her back down and say your sleep phrase.  What do you think?

She is not pulling to stand yet, but I think will get there soon. Thanks for the advice. I will try it out and see.
