Lays awake quietly at nap

Stats: 17 day old. 9lbs DS. 3hr easy.

E: 7am wake
A: 7:35 diaper, little snuggle/talk, wind down w swaddle and shush pat
S: 8am lay down heavy eyes

This reapeats every 3 hrs except his eyes pop wide when he is put down. He'll remain quiet but awake for 30 or 40 minutes. Sometimes at that point he begins to cry. Thoughts? Thanks!

Does he generally fall asleep by himself then? He's so little, I wouldn't worry about helping him to fall asleep at this age if he needs it. Do you use white noise? I wonder if you put him down 10 mins earlier if he'd settle faster...
