Hi,

Okay....we have a new problem I really don't know what to do about.  I wasn't sure if I should continue this with this post or start a new thread but decided to just continue.  The last few days my son has been grunting and squirming in his crib for considerable amounts of time.  Example EASY today:

After getting 10.5 hours of sleep in the night
Woke up at 7:15
E 7:45
A Started to show tired signs at 8:50 so I started the WD and had him in his crib at 9:05.
S 9:33 fell asleep (He yawned in his crib a couple minutes after I put him down so I know he was tired but he still took 27 minutes to fall asleep as he kept grunting and squirming.  Fell asleep independently. Woke after 34 minutes, wouldn't go back to sleep so rocked him in rocking chair back to sleep and he slept another 1 hour and 5 minutes.
E 11:40
A 1:30 Started acting fussy so began WD.  Decided to use stroller and walk as APOP.
S 1:50 fell asleep independently after mantra crying for 20 minutes.  Woke up 25 minutes later and couldn't get him to go back to sleep.
E 3:15
A No signs of tiredness at all but since he'd only slept 25 minutes and it was now nearing the 2 hour mark, I did his WD and put him in his crib at 4:20.  He yawned a few minutes later so I know he was tired.  Nonetheless he just made noises, grunted, and squirmed and occasionally mantra cried for well....it has now been 1 hour and 10 minutes.  15 minutes ago we decided to go in and re-do the WD to see if that helps but he's now just mantra crying.

What do we do?  I don't want to go in and help him since he's only mantra crying.  But he's not sleeping, so what do we do?  One would assume he must be under-tired if he's been trying to put himself to sleep for 1 hour and 15 minutes but I know that isn't the case as he's only had just over 2 hours of sleep today.

What is going on? Any ideas?  What should I do?

Oh, I should add to my last post that this has happened for other nap times (not just the cat nap) and when trying to go to bed at times too.  For example, yesterday he had a 1 hour 30 minute nap (independently!) in the morning. I then aimed for his next sleep time to be 2 hours later but instead, after I put him in his crib, he was calm with the occasionally squirm and grunt for 35 minutes and then mantra cried for another 20 before I finally just got him to try rocking him to sleep.  As soon as I started rocking him he began to scream but eventually settled and slept for 1 hour.

So....was he under tired yesterday for that nap and over tired for the nap I described in the previous reply today?

Unfortunately, we average 12.5 -13.5 hours total sleep in a 24 hour period.  I know that isn't enough for the average baby but just getting that takes a considerable amount of work and effort on my part and I really don't think I can do more to help him...  I cannot get this boy to get enough total sleep. So, perhaps he's just chronically over tired no matter how much sleep he got the night before or nap before??  If that is the case, should I aim for shorter A times and try to get him caught up?  Or does he need less sleep?  I just don't know....

Sorry for the super long posts :-\

Hi- just to add my 2 cents, my LO's sleep totals for the day are between 12 and 14:40, averaging 13 hours. So yours don't seem especially low...

If it makes you feel better, my daughter averages 13 hrs a day now.. she was max 14 hrs a day at his age - so really not all that different.

Is he 6 months yet???  Must be getting close... A times really start to go up by leaps and bounds around this age so you may need to increase his first A time again...
