10 week old waking up 2-3 times at night
« on: February 06, 2013, 16:33:29 pm »
My son is 10 weeks old and last week he woke up just once during the night to feed. He did that for two nights in a row and then started waking up at different times every night for 2 or 3 times to feed... It can't be a growth spurt because it's been going on for 1 whole week now. However, last week I had severe gastroenteritis and am wondering if that affected my milk supply (I breastfeed mainly but one bottle for the dreamfeed). Also I'd like to point out that he's a veeeery fast eater, he goes for 3 hours between feedings but his feeds only ever last for 5-8 mins... When I give him a bottle at 11pm he takes 90ml max
Also may I have a link where the wake to sleep for naps is explained as when I try to look for a specific topic in the forum it says I am not allowed to.
Many thanks :)
Here's his routine should you need it:
8am wakes up and feeds
9am sleeps - after 45 mins I have to sshh and pat to get him to sleep until 11am
11am feeds
12:15 sleeps
sometimes he'll sleep fpr 45-60mins and goes back down with shh and pat and sometimes it won't work
14:00 feeds
15:15 sleeps and here we have to fight a lot for him to sleep for 1:30hours
16:30 wakes
17:00 I now give him a bottle (started this yesterday) and he eats very little like 30ml and at 17:30 he'll eat another 90ml!! Why??
17:45 catnap
18:30 wakes
19:00 feeds
19:15 bath
19:30 feeds some more
19:45 bedtime
23:00 dreamfeed
the past couple of nights he woke at 2:15 and then again at 6 to feed and before then we woke 3 times, basically every two hours!

I think it's a good possibility that your illness has affected your supply. If you want to make sure your supply is coming back as it should, I would ditch the bottles during the day (I'm assuming these are formula rather than EBM) and nurse frequently and also when he wakes at night.  It's totally normal for a 10 week old BF baby to still have 2-3 NFs, including the DF, so I don't think what's happening is all that out of the ordinary.

Your routine looks fine, he may need a bit more A time at the beginning of the day to continue getting good naps.  Average A for his age is 1h15m-1h20m.  Here is the link to w2s: How do I address habitual wakings? (wake-to-sleep and other methods). At his age, holding through the jolts typically works best.

HTH! :)
