7mth waking every 2 hours - which feed to drop first?
« on: February 08, 2013, 02:11:41 am »
Hello.  I've had some great advice about pu/pd which we are going to start with our 7mth old dd who is still waking every 2-3 hours at night.   However, I don't want to cut out all night feeds cold turkey, but just wondering which feeds I should be stopping first and doing pu/pd instead.

Bedtime is normally 6:30pm and she then wakes at 10-10:30pm (this has never been a df on purpose, she just wakes up), 1am, 3am, 5:30am.  Awake 7am.

I'm not that keen on a df (as I go to bed early, so have to wake up to give df anyway), so was thinking of dropping 10:30pm feed and doing pu/pd instead at that time.  After that time, only feeding her if it has been longer than 4 hours.  If she wakes earlier than 4 hours, doing pu/pd instead.

Does this seem like a good plan, or do you suggest something else...

A few other things,  she is eating 3 solid meals a day and still bf as well.  Totally independant sleeper other than NWs where she has a boob prop.  On good EASY with two long naps during the day.

any advice would be really helpful as I'm so tired and need some sleep soon...

She could well be hungry at 10:30 as that is 4 hr from bedtime.
It's the ones in between... 1 and 5:30 on that I'd be doing PUPD with so she's eating at four hour intervals.

How much solid food is she eating? Could it be reducing her milk intake? Milk is higher in calories than any solid food you can really give her at this age, so it really should be the main source of nutrition up until she's one.

Thanks for reply bec.  She is eating quite a bit of food and yes, I do think that her milk intake has dropped.  Not heaps though.  I'm still feeding her an hour before she has solids though so she has a good feed.  she really wants the solid food too...starts getting cranky if I don't feed her quick enough etc.

During the NWs, I wouldn't say she drinks very much.   Half the time she drinks a bit and the other half she literally just attaches herself to the boob and that's it, no sucking or anything.  feel like a human dummy really.

So I guess you're suggesting that I do the 10:30pm feed and wait for 4 hours until I feed her again (so 2:30am and 6:30am).  If she wakes earlier than those times, do pu/pd... does that sound right?

She has never really slept much longer than 4 hours at one time at night.  For about 3 weeks (at about 5 months) she was going from bedtime at 6:30pm - midnight, but not anymore.  It's just getting worse and the NWs more frequent.

Are you going in too early?
