Pinching feeling, what could cause it?
« on: February 28, 2013, 23:53:04 pm »
My son has had a hard time with latching and eating since birth.  I worked with a lactation consultant and got him latching really well.  now all of a sudden on my right side every time he latched there is this pinching feeling on the right side of the nipple.  I have tried to take him off and adjust him, look at his lips, everything seems as it should be.  So I am wondering what could be causing the pinching feeling so I can make it stop?  It is making nursing on that side not fun at all!

Is he teething? How old is he? i found every now and then this would happen with us. I think too that rather than a pinching that it might be a stretching sort of a sensation? Now that my guy is older he sort of moves around a bit sometimes and can stretch it a bit and that can hurt? The other thing to try is to try a different hold- like the foot ball or twin position? This can give that side of your nipple a break for a bit and may just break up the pattern that he;s doing? I did that with my at the time 10 month old- it looked STUPID this bigg lump of a bubba wrapped around me- but worked a treat for the troube i was having

sorry, he is 18 days old.  He does move around a bit but it makes the pinching worse so I usually take him off and fix the latch.

Oh sorry hon- I was thinking he was older.. probably not as applicable for such a little guy- i more meant that you know how when they are 6 months plus they can feed but move around more- taking your nipple with them ::)

You could still try the alternative hold for a few feeds as that will give your nipple a bit of a break on that side. You don't want the 'pinching' to turn into an abrasion or anything like that!

It could be vasospasms which can happen if he is having issues latching.  I had them with DS (on one side only) and they really felt like severe pinching whenever he latched and then would get better a few minutes into the feed.  I was on some supplements to help and things did clear up- I can't remember what though.  The supplements were recommended by a Dr. specializing in breastfeeding but maybe a nurse or naturopath could point you in the right direction if that turns out to be the case.

Has your LC ruled out a tongue tie (perhaps posterior) or a lip tie?  DD always made my left nipple more sore than the right, although both did hurt (a lot) ultimately.

Does it hurt for the whole feed or does it ease off?

It varies.  sometimes it hurts the whole feed other times it is just at the beginning.  I know for sure there is no tongue tie.  they checked that in the hospital.

:-\
I imagine your LC has already talked through an exaggerated latch, but maybe that would be worth a try?

Unlikely to be vasospasm then....
Yes, give the exaggerated latch a try and see how you get on, otherwise it might be worth seeing that LC again and seeing what they can suggest
