Please help me get through these 45 minute naps....
« on: March 04, 2013, 18:45:50 pm »
DS is just shy of 4 months and is a textbook/touchy baby

We have 2 issues going on at the moment - I think his EASY is off, and I am trying to wean him off the swing for naps. I know he can fall asleep independently, because he falls asleep on his own at bedtime. He also falls asleep on his own in his crib if I get him down in the window. I have let him take most naps until now in the swing. I am ready to wean him to the crib. He is on a 3 ish hour EASY, with a 1.5 hour wake time. He has not been sleeping as well in the swing, so I decided to work on the transition to crib for naptimes. he falls asleep fairly quickly in his crib with a little shh pat and his paci. He wakes at the 45 minute mark every single time. I believe this is developmental, because he is waking in the swing also, and just generally a lot harder to settle.

I have a toddler, so really cannot work on extending naps too much at this time. I am trying to get one good nap a day to prevent OT, but I seem to have failed, because he is def OT now. Basically, I can't even get him to extend the nap even if I AP.

recent EASY:
WU and E 6
S 730-820
E 845
S 915-1045
E 11
S 12-2/1145-145
E 2
S 330-430 (sometimes this nap turns into 2 short naps instead)
E 530
BT 6

today and recently we have had these issues:

WU and eat: 6
S: 730
WU at 820 to drop off DS1
E: 845
S: 9 (In swing, didnt really settle until 10) - woke on his own at 1050
E: 11
S: 12 - fell asleep on his own in his crib at 1215
W: woke up at 100, wouldn't even close his eyes again with shh patting - moved him to swing, still wouldn't settle, thought he might be hungry, wouldn't eat, screaming, tried swing again and fell asleep. I'm assuming he will wake around 2 to eat.

I am aiming for 1 nap a day in the crib, and then moving up to all naps in the crib by the time he is 5 months. I know 3-5 months is a crazy time developmentally for naps, and this seems to hit my kids really hard. DS1 really could not take a long nap on his own until he was 5-6 months. This baby really cant deal AT ALL with being even a little overtired. Since I know he can fall asleep on his own, I guess I am being a little too generous with the APing to try and extend naps.

Does it make sense that since he can fall asleep on his own, he will eventually be fine on his own once he can get through those transitions? I am fine APing the transitions if it won't be necessary in the long run. and sometimes that doesn't always work...I realize this is rambling so sorry! Not sure if this belongs here or in props...

I guess my question is really should I just be doing what I need to do to get through the day, as long as I make sure he is falling asleep on his own at least once or twice a day, or do I really need to be working on those transitions also?

TIA

Hi hon- My advice is to ditch the resettling. You've tried it, it doesn't work, and you have too much to do with your other LO. I think that you are better to try pushing up his A time a little - closer to the 2 hour mark. Add 10/15 mins every 3-4 days. THis might help make him more tired and then he may sleep longer.

You sound like you are on the right track though!
