Help with napping and getting a routine together please
« on: March 06, 2013, 09:49:33 am »
Hi all

DD is 8 weeks. I have her in a rough 3 hour routine (it is tricky sometimes as I also have a 4 year old who is in nursery 3 days per week).

DD is EBF and gaining weight nicely. She has reached the magic 10lb mark by now.

Our routine looks something like:

7.00-8.00 wake up and feed (normally around 15 minutes, normally only one side)

8.30 - sleepy signs (sometimes sleeps in basket, sometimes in buggy - depends if it is a nursery day)

If in cot - 45-50 minute sleep, in buggy can be 2 or 3 hours

11.00 - feed (see above)

12.00 - sleep (normally 45-50 minutes unless in buggy)

2.00 - feed

3.00 sleep (this is usually a tough one as she doesn't always want to go down)

4.00 - feed

5.00 - sleepy (this again is where it can be tricky as I normally collect DS from nursery here)

6.00 bedtime routine (she hates the bath) and can take up to an hour to hour and a half to settle. Last night took until nearly 8 with lots of shush pat and feeding

Last night last feed was at 7, then dream feed at 10.30. She slept until nearly 2, then asleep until 4. She then awoke again at 5, and 6. She then slept through until 7.30. Fed her, then put her down at 8.30 (she fed both sides so it took that long to feed and change her). She then only slept for 30 minutes. The more I tried to settle her, the more worked up she got. As I have a 4 year old, I can't always spend hours trying to settle her for naps. Taking her for a walk in the buggy helps, but again, I can't do that every nap time either.

She hates being swaddled (fought it every single time and it only got her more worked up and harder to settle). It didn't really extend her nap times by more than 5 minutes. She is learning to suck her fingers and thumb, refuses dumm/paci.

Any thoughts on how I can crack this night waking and short napping?

Looking at your EASY it seems that she is OT and is on a too high A for her age. If you have a look here: chronological EASY samples, 0-3 months you'll see that most babies are doing between 1:15-1:45h A time, so IIWY I would be aiming more for that.
Hopefully this will help with naps, but it could also be that it's developmental and she doesn't manage to go through the sleep cycles herself, and this will get better once she is older. You can try HTTJ for this and read about it here: How do I address habitual wakings? (wake-to-sleep and other methods), the last paragraph.
