Screaming through naps
« on: February 22, 2013, 21:18:33 pm »
My daughter just turned six weeks old.  I am familiar with the easy routine and followed it with my two older children.  Right now the baby, Clare, is struggling to nap.  She will sometimes go down after just a few minutes of fussing and then sleep for 1-1.5 hours.  She tends to be on a eat every 2.5 hours routine, but sometimes goes three hours.  She sleeps well at night, for a six week old!  Fr some reason she has been fighting some naps.  We will get her to her room as soon as she starts yawning but then she will start screaming. Once she starts there doesn't seem to be any way to stop it.  Se will scream right on through to the time when she would normally have woken up from her nap to eat.  S then she is WAY overtired and also hungry. How do I get her to sleep instead of screaming through a nap?

Hugs.
Do you think she is in a GS and still hungry? - there is a big one at 6 weeks or so.
What time do you try to pd for a nap? How are you doing it - does she have a WD? - some LOs are easily stimulated and need quiet time before a nap.

Try making sure her A time isn't too long. Anything over an hour fifteen from eyes open to eyes closed probably means she is OT :-*

I was thinking that it might be a growth spurt. I am trying to feed her more today and things are a bit better. I will also try putting her down sooner. Maybe she needs to be in the bedroom even before she starts yawning?  I will see how the next few days go with the changes. Thanks for the hugs!

So I have realized that she needs to be in her room after being awake only 45 minutes. She doesn't go to sleep right then, but she needs to have her stimulation at that time seriously limited. Se is a really alert baby and I guess if she can look around the room she just doesn't relax at all. She is doing better. She will fuss before going to sleep, but she does actually go to sleep for naps now.

We also discovered that she has a milk protein allergy. It took some time to figure out how to avoid all hidden dairy and soy, but it has helped her stay settled and be much happier in general. Thanks to the moms from this forum I was able to talk intelligently with her pediatrician to figure out what was wrong.

Great to hear about the naps. My ds2 is similar he needs stimulation removed 20 mins before sleep or we have 30 min naps ::)

Wonderful you worked out she is MSPI. I hope she stays happy and settled for you now. :-*
