Waking mid-nap
« on: March 12, 2013, 16:26:47 pm »
Hi,

I'm new to the forum but have found some great ideas and advice through looking at the various posts and replies.

My 11 week old is STTN but his daytime naps are a bit of a battlefield. I decided to spend the next 4 days at home just trying to get him back on track. When I put him down for his naps he will either sleep through until his next feed time and I will have to go in and get him up or he will wake 30-45 minutes in and it will then take me anything from 15-45 minutes to get him to go back to sleep.

However this afternoon, whilst in the middle of an essay for my university course, I discovered that if I leave him crying (just shouting really, wanting attention, not screaming) he settles himself. Now I wouldn't usually leave him when he does this but would be upstairs trying to soothe him back to sleep, but this afternoon I was writing an essay and needed to get a sentence finished before going into him. By the time I'd finished writing what I was trying to say and got upstairs, he'd settled himself back to sleep.

So now I'm not sure what to do. How long should I leave him crying before going to him? Is it OK to leave him crying? Am I going in too soon when he does start and so waking him up further?

Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated as I would really like him to nap for longer periods so that I can get on and do whatever I need to do, especially when I've got assignments due for University!

Hi there,

STTN at 11 weeks - that's great!!!

For naps - if your lo resettles pretty quickly, my guess is this is mantra cry. Here's a link to the info about mantra cry in the FAQ on this board:

What’s a mantra cry?

I recently posted to see how long it is appropriate to let a lo resettle as well - mine goes back and forth between eyes open and content to a bit of hollering - but it's not really crying, so I let her go a bit and she often resettles - if it escalates into a cry, or if I've misheard her cry, I go in right away.  Sometimes even if it is mantra, but it seems to be going on and on, I go in to do a little shh-ing or light pressure or pop in a paci which seems to get her back on track to settling back into sleep, although I know in her books, Tracy recommends not going in if it is mantra cry.

I guess it depends on your lo and what you are comfortable with, and perhaps age as well - I feel that dd2 (5weeks) is so young that she is still learning and still needs some help at times. I always wait and see if it's surely not a pain/hunger cry right off the bat, but you know your lo best.  TBH, I know mantra more by the intensity and the duration than the tone.  At first sound, I often don't know which it is and always cross my fingers (if it's mid-nap) but within a few moments I can usually tell.  Also, it seems that when it occurs at the same time in a nap, it's often mantra as they wake and resettle at the same points - often :30 or :40 here.

Hope this helps and saves you some time bent over the crib!  Happy napping (or paper writing)!

Hello again -

Here's a related post that you might find helpful - same age LO too:

Mantra cry...but she needs ME to fall asleep

This kind of covers bridging the gap - although it sounds like when you do go in then you're in for a while - they are all so different!
