8 week old naps
« on: March 20, 2013, 23:00:52 pm »
Hello! I just began implementing the EASY routine with my 8 week baby boy and I am having trouble with the the nap that happens after the 4:00 feeding. It is recommended for this nap to be 40 min or so but he falls asleep after an hour ( at 5 or so) and sleeps until 7 ( time for next feeding) not sure what to do since he begins to show signs of tiredness at around 5. Should I try keeping him awake ( he may be overstimulated) or let him sleep the 2 hours. All,other naps are perfect.

Thanks

Sounds like things are going well!  In terms of the short nap at the end of the day, I think that the reason for keeping it fairly short is to allow a proper bedtime routine/pattern to be introduced.  If he sleeps for a 2 hour block then effectively you end up without a formal 'line' between the two types of sleep, which may become a problem as he gets a bit bigger.  You don't mention his nighttime sleep --- is he managing a longer stretch or is he effectively following the same 3 hour loop around the clock?

Thank you for the quick response! We just started the routine and we are currently working on his 2:30 am waking , he wakes up out of habit ( not hungry) and then wakes up at 4:00am ( I feed him at that time) and then again at 7:00. Hopefully we can eliminate the 2:30 and then the 4:@0am.
Today he slept from 5:00pm woke up at 7:00, ate, then bath and down for the night at 8:00 ( took us 30 minutes for him to fall asleep) so began sleeping at 8:30.

Any suggestions highly appreciated, I am a first time mom and sleep has been a challenge this first 8 weeks. Looking forward to EASY working  :)

Hi, im not going to be that much help im affraid but i could have written that post!!! Im having very similar issues with the last nap, my DD is 10 weeks and always seems to go into a heavy nap at that time, i feel awful for waking her but i try to make sure she has her last feed at around the same time each night which sometimes she can hardly stay awake for but then i change her bum which wakes her enough for her bath and cuddle time and then she goes down and is usually asleep by about 8.30, the bt routine helps her know that its bed time now!! Time for proper sleep!! But yes, i worry she is napping too close to bedtime,
Are you giving the DF?
Im a first time mum too so this is all new to me aswell!! But so happy i found EASY!!

Glad to know I am not the only one! Yes we are doing DF. I am worry this last nap may be interrupting his night time sleep. Is your baby sleeping during the night or still waking?

She is still waking once only  :) it can be any time between 2am and 4am, i don't seem to be able to find anything in her day that establishes what time she wakes, its always random, which i read that that means she is waking because of hunger and not habit, also i always have to change her as she always poos during the feed!! But she settles quite well again after but only recently, she was a bit of a nightmare to get back down before!! Now she is waking up between 6-6:30 but today for instance, she layed in her cot cooing at the shadows till 7  :D I have been told by other members that at 8 weeks its still very normal for LO to be waking once or twice in the night for feeds, i think there is still a way to go before we start sleeping again!!!  ;)

I hate to say it, but things may get worse before they get better...these pesky babies have a bad habit of shifting their sleep patterns just when you think you have it sorted!

The general wisdom of BW aims for about a 12 hour day for the first few months, or thereabouts.  I would be careful about setting up a day length that is too much longer, as when your little ones get a bit bigger they will need an earlier bedtime and it may be tricky to adjust.  I really, really recommend setting up a strong bedtime routine which is the same every day, as in my experience this resets the clock, no matter how well (or otherwise) the day has gone, and gives you the best possible chance of decent night sleep!

Good luck -- there is some great advice on this site!
