Sleeping with blanket over his head
« on: March 25, 2013, 10:38:06 am »
Ds is 3.75 years old. Recently he has started putting his blanket over his head to fall asleep. We go into his room and take it off when he is asleep. He gets so sweaty! I just went into his room at 3 am to check on him as I was just up with dd and it was back on! I took it off, came back a couple of minutes later and it's back on again ::) Do any of your little ones do this? I'm concerned that he won't have enough oxygen! Or am I just being a paranoid mom? I just find it so stuffy under a blanket.

Thanks

Yeh ds2 does this, and if it is not his duvet it is his teddy (which is one of those blanket type comforter things). I always move it and he is always hot and sweaty too. I don't really know how you would stop it other than give him one of those cellular type blankets with holes in if you are worried..? I can't get ds2 a cellular teddy though and he would never sleep without it so.... ::) :P

Dd1 has slept like this forever. She puts her lovey and her blanky over her head to fall asleep. It doesn't stay like that all night but that's what she needs to sleep. It scared the crap at of me at first but now at almost 4 I don't see how I can stop it.

My DS does this too, and he's not even a year old yet and he's been doing it for for a while.  He rubs his face in his blanket and it just stays over his head.  I go in and pull it off, but then like you said he either puts it back on, or he'll smush his face in his stuffed monkey or something.  He gets sweaty during the day for naps so I usually strip him down, but at night we turn the heat down so it's normally cool enough for him.

I think as long as the blanket is fairly breathable it should be okay :)  I slept underneath the covers from when I was a child through high school!

My dd STILL does this at 6 years old! About 80% of the time.  She has told me that she does it because she feels scared, and being cozy inside her blankie makes her feel safe.  :-\   We go in and take it off her face, and many times she leaves it off.  I had to stop worrying about it. If she were a very young baby I would switch out the balnket or something, but at these ages, I don't think it's a danger. I fail to see how it's comfortable, but I don't think it's unsafe.

My DS just started doing the exact same thing a couple weeks ago. The first couple times I saw it I moved the blanket off his head but then he would get fussy and put it back. So now I just leave it. He must have a reason for doing it, which is beyond me since his room is already pitch black.

My ds does it too!  Sleeps with his pillow &/or teddies on his head.  Its like he wants to make a little cosy 'nest' to make him feel secure!  Scared me at first too but I think he is ok!

I think pressure on the face can help you to feel sleepy - certainly does for me - so maybe that has something to do with it??

Can't see any danger in it for older children who can move themselves around.

Thanks ladies, so it's unanimous then- paranoid mom!

The main reason I was concerned is that I was worried that it was a lack of oxygen that was making him so to sleep so easily. I think he is sitting up with the blanket over his head, then lies down or falls asleep and then lies down so it's really quite hard for me to get off sometimes as a bunch of it is underneath him. When I ask he says it makes him warm and he falls asleep easily that way.

Okay, I guess I should stop panicking!
