Naps in stroller
« on: March 18, 2013, 09:31:41 am »
Our girl is 7 1/2 months and is sleeping through a day only in her stroller. If i put her in her night bed she wakes up after 30 min. In stroller she sleeps for 1.5h twice a day.
Does anyone has any advice how to get her to sleep in her bad through a day and what ritual to choose through a day. I am doing now a pu/pd for 3 night and we are getting somewhere, we sleep much better through a day, but i wonder if it is necessary for her to sleep in bed through a day so the night sleeps will get better. Is stroller a prop?
Thank you in advance!

We always had the opposite problem - 30 min naps in stroller/carseat etc, anywhere other than cot.  I think it must just be what they are used to.  In the stroller do you have to be walking for her to fall asleep or stay asleep?  If not I would be tempted not to worry ;-)  Are there issues with her night sleep?

I just have to walk for 1 minute or even nothing, but sometimes she wakes up and i have to walk with her for 5 minutes. Nights are getting better after we did weaning from BF at night. But will she forever sleep in her pram during the day...that is what i worry....

We had naps in the pram till DS was 5m and then we felt that we want to stop with it and that we are ready, so we did sleep training.
I think that if you ARE  worried and you want to stop with naps in the pram and you are anyway doing sleep training with PU/PD then it's worth doing it for day sleep as well.
If you want you can post your day in an EASY format and we can have a look at her A and naps, perhaps something need to be tweaked to help her sleep longer than 30min.

Wake up 6.30
E 8.00, breastfeeding and fruit cereal
A
S 9.30-11.00
Y
E breastfeeding lunch 12.00 vegetables, meat, potatoes
A
S14.30-16.00
Y
E16.00 fruit cereal
18.00 milk cereal

Her A times seem about right and I would say that if she is napping well in the pram with those A times then she should manage to do the same in the crib.
DS was younger than your DD so we used pat/shh, but I don't think that's age appropriate for you anymore and I would go with PU/PD if I were you. And we did it "cold turkey", but only because I knew both him and me can handle it. You know your LO best, if she could handle with cold turkey or would need a more gradual approach.
I simply started to have all naps in the crib and did the shh/pat (in your case PU/PD) till LO fell asleep. We had a couple of days of OT because it took him so long to fall asleep he then got OT, but after those days he got the idea that this is how naps are going to be form now on and it fell into place.
What you could do, if you are concerned it will take her long to fall asleep for naps, put her down 10min earlier to give her those 10 extra minutes of being awake and not get OT. And as well if you are getting days with short naps then you can shorten the A time that comes after them to prevent OT (though that never worked for us, DS always needed a full A time after a short nap in order to get a good nap out of him).
Good luck!

Thank you very much. Have some Q... What was your wind down ritual.. Took her to nursery, change diper, made dark, 4 S without swadling...?  What it looked like inmpractice? Did you do the shh- path when she woke up until her S time was over, or for how long? What if she woke up not crying just 'talking'....ju still shh- path (pupd).

Thanks i have some more courage now, i will start next week cold turkey. This week i' ll wait to see how our nights will turn with pu pd!

My DS was very touchy and couldn't take any wind down, it was too stimulating for him. We would just walk around the house, say bye bye to all the rooms, I would talk to him with a very quiet voice that it's sleepy time now and then we'd go to his room, make the room totally dark and put down in the crib. I always left the room straight away and waited to see what happened. If he cried I would sit next to him and shh/pat (or PD when he was much older) till he fell asleep and then leave the room.
From early on I found that it was very distressing to try and extend naps. I had PPD and the crying and shouting in a dark room just killed me, so I stopped. In the few times I tried extending naps again when DS was older it never worked as well. So if I got a short nap I would just start the A. At first I tried a shorter A after a short nap, because I read that's what Tracey recommended but I always got UT (45min) naps and when I did a full A I got full naps (1.5h).
But this is us, yk? Your baby is a different baby then mine and you are different than me :).
If after a while of doing sleep training, like PU/PD, there is no change  - so LO does manage to fall asleep ind. but naps are not long enough then it could be that the A time needs to be tweaked.
Give it a go, I am here if you have more questions :).

I manage to put her in bed for naps and she slept yesterday for 1 h 20 min two times. Today she slept for 1 h 20 min and 1 h, but this was after her A time was riding in car, than in stroller and lunch, no physical activity at all. I wonder when to put her in bed for night sleep.
WU 6.20
E
A
S 9.25-10.55

E
A
S 14.00-15.20
If she does A for 3 h, than she should go to bed at 18.30, but she is sleeping for 11h, i think she will WU at 5.30 am, a little bit too early. Can i hold her for 4 h last A time?
Do you think i should increase her A time as she has short naps?

Her naps are not too bad, but still a bit short and she is probably ready for a bit more A time. I would increase it by 10-15min and stick to it for 3-4 days and see if there is a change. At her age she should manage more than 3h, plus 2 naps of 1.5-2h, that would bring you to a 13h day if she sleeps 11h at night.

Hey, today i tried to extend her A time. In the morning she slept 1h 15min,i started to put her to nap after 3,5h A,but she was crying and strugling and felt a sleep after 4h. Than again in the afternoon i tried after 3,5h but after 1h i quit, and tried again later, after 5h A time and she felt a sleep in 10min PUPD, waiting now for her to wake up. But why didnt she felt a sleep in the afternoon, only after 5h A time she did,she wasnt cranky at all. But 5h cant be her A time?! Is it possible that it is because she is going through milestone phase of standing, she might also be hungry,in between i gave her fruit, because it was her E time already. Confused... When i do PUPD she does not settle when i pick her up she is crying all the time. How sleepy should she be when i start to sett the scene, path?

3.5h might be too much for her and she was OT by the time you put her down, hence the nap refusal. Have you jumped straight away from 3h to 3.5h A time? That could be too big jump for her. I think she was crying a lot with the PU/PD because she was OT. If you just started PU/PD then the first stage is to put LO drowsy in the cot, so most settling is on the arms, but if you've been doing it for a while then she should settle in your arms but don't wait for her to be sleepy or drowsy, she should be going down awake. But this all depends how you did PU/PD till now and in what stage you are at. You can also have a look here: How to PU/PD (inc age adaptations)
Defo if she started standing that can effect sleep for many babies.
