Hi, DS is almost 3 months old and we've been using shush pat pretty much since birth. For the last month or so, he can pretty much self settle himself to sleep for all his naps. I am really grateful for that and I know I shouldn't complain but I still can't help wondering why he cannot self settle during bedtime and how I could help him learn to fall asleep at bedtime.

Our nap routine is really just close the curtains, swaddle, put him in his cot, and say it's time for bed, and he would start sucking his hand and fall asleep 5-10 minutes later with almost no fussing/crying

Our bedtime routine is:
bath or wipe down -> breastfeed (both sides) -> swaddle -> put him in cot, close curtains, say 'night night'
Sometimes he fall asleep from his feed. I would then put him in his cost and leave the room. He would then wake up crying (at increasing volume) about 10 minutes later and I have to go in to shush pat him.

When he doesn't fall asleep after BF, I would shush pat him until he stop fussing, then leave the room (or hide in a corner) and see if he would fall aslee[ on his own. He almost never. He would fuss and start crying and then I have to go in and pat him for anywhere from 5 to 20 min before he falls asleep.

He will then sleep until 11:30pm when I wake him up for a feed, and then sleep until 5/6/7am (diff every day). He usually has no problem self settling if he wakes up during the night.

My main concern is whether I have become his prop for his bedtime? If not, then how can I help him fall asleep on his own?

When DD1 was this age, it would take a good 10-20 mins of shush par for her to go down at night too. I don't think you're becoming a prop at all. He is learning bit by bit. Xxx

Do you think he could be OT by bedtime and struggling to settle because of that?  Did you want to post a typical daytime routine for us?

My LO has always been (and still is) more difficult to get to sleep at BT although with advice on routine adjustments from Katherine (jessmum46) it did get better.

DS - November 2014

Hi, thanks for your replies. We are on a loose routine. Bedtime is usually between 7pm and 7:45pm, depends on what time he wakes up, whether he wakes at 5-ish am for a feed, and how long his last cat nap is. We usually have two types of typical days:

Typical day 1:
Wake up at 7am
E 7:15am
S 8:30-10:30am
E 11:15am
S noon-2pm
E 3pm
S 3:30-4:15pm
A 4:15pm
S 5:45-6pm (catnap)
Bath 6:45pm
E 7pm
S 7:30pm

Typical day 2:
EW: 5:30am for feed
Wake up at 8am
E 8:15am
S 9:30-11:30am
E 11:30am
S 1-2:30/3pm
E 3pm
S 4:30pm-5:15/5:30
Bath 6:15pm
E 6:30pm
Bedtime 7pm

With typical day one I think I would try for an earlier BT.  Between 3pm and 7.30pm your LO only has a 45 min nap and a quick CN - I suspect by 7.30pm he is OT.  The alternative is trying to get your third nap on those days to be a bit longer - perhaps add 5-10 mins to the A time before and see if that makes him tired enough for a longer nap.  You could then skip the late CN and go for the 7.30pm BT.

On typical day two it's a bit tricky - again he may be OT from a full last A time after a 45 min nap, though because the day is only 11h there might be some overall UT at play too.  Again I would try for a longer third nap and 7.30pm BT I think - do you think that would be possible?

Hi jessmum,

Last night, I reduced the last A time of the day by 15min as you suggested, and guess what, DD fell asleep on his own! I basically did the bedtime routine 15 min earlier, and then put his in his cot. Since he didn't fuss, I decided to take a shower instead of sitting around waiting for him to fall asleep or fuss. I left the door between the bathroom and my room (he's still sleeping in my room) opened so I could hear if he start crying. So the bedroom wasn't even completely dark or quiet. When I came out of the shower, he was asleep!

Today, we actually had a hectic day so his last A time ended up being 1hr 45min. Not ideal. Anyway, I did the same as yesterday - his bedtime routine followed by a shower for myself. When I came out, he was only making v little noise, so I sat at a corner and a few minutes later, he was asleep again!

No patting or shushing needed at all!

Fingers crossed he will conitnue to fall asleep on his own for the next few nights and I will call it a success!

Thank you such much for everyone who responded to this thread!

Hi there - seems like things are coming around - just curious about 1 thing - is the general wisdom that because they may tire out more/faster throughout the day, that you may need to cut last A time (like first A time) a bit shorter than the others? If so, then do you push out other A times or cap naps if you end up under about a 12 hour day?

You wouldn't want to cap naps....that would make LO more tired and day even shorter ;) if LO needs a shorter last A time that's fine, some do. If you find it's causing a problem with UT NWs or EWs you can push the other A times, but if if isn't broken don't fix it!
