9 month old night and early wakings
« on: March 31, 2013, 02:20:55 am »
My DD turned 9mos a week ago and sleeps well in general, bedtime around 630 and up until she started to cut her 2 front teeth she would wake up around 7 or 730. She wakes up once each night and for awhile it was always 5am but recently she's been waking anywhere from 2am to 5am. I nurse her and she falls back to sleep quite easily but I'm not entirely sure she's actually hungry. I would like to phase out this feeding but am not sure how to do it. Should I do it gradually or cut it out cold turkey?
I should mention that I have been phasing out bf slowly over the last month or so and replacing with pumped milk, currently I only bf during those night wakings and first thing in the am. Do you think she misses bf and is waking for the comfort?
Also for the last couple of weeks she has been waking up really early, usually between 530 and 6. I'm pretty sure this is just because of the teething but I would love to hear any suggestions for extending her sleep. I'm not a fan of getting up that early :) before this little phase she was pretty consistently waking at 7 or later.
Love to hear any feedback!

What's your routine during the day?

Its possible. Is she waking more often, or just earlier?

Here is a sample of our day yesterday....I've stopped writing everything down so this is my best recollection.

W/BF 4am
W/BF 6:30ish
E 7
A 3hr
S 9:30
W/E 11
A 3hr
S 2pm
W 3:30
Snack 4:00
Bath 5:15
Dinner 5:45
Bed 6:30ish

She is still only waking once a night and then waking for the day earlier in the AM. It seems that the night waking and morning waking are just getting closer together.
Looking at this day I think she probably needs a bump in A time but she just finished cutting her 2 front teeth and didn't really seem up for it. Do you think that could be a factor?

I'd say she definitely needs an A time increase. Average A times and "Is my baby ready to increase A time?"

The gradually waking earlier things is a sign to increase A times :)

Okay great - thank you! I added 10 mins this morning and got a 45 minute nap but I will stick with it a couple of days and see if I need to add 10 more to get a good nap. I think she may need more than a 10 minute bump for her pm nap though - do you think 20 would be too much?

So it seems like 20 mins may have been too much...she only slept for 40 mins :( Afternoons are tough as she has way fewer tired signs than the morning. I guess I should stick with the 10 minutes for the next few days and see what happens?

Yeah, I'd stick with 10min for a few days.
