14 month old - 2 to 1 nap or because Mama is back to work?
« on: April 22, 2013, 23:49:05 pm »
HELP! My good sleeping baby is missing :(

My DS who is 14 months old was a wonderful sleeper until this past week. This was his typical day:

Awake: 700
Nap:10 - 11 or 1130
Nap: 3-4
Bed: 730

He would sleep for 2 naps of about an hour each a day with no fuss going down and at 730 he was asleep in bed (only took a few min of him babbling to himself in the crib).

I have returned this week to work and things just aren't the same in the sleep department. The last week he has been fighting his afternoon naps. Sometimes it would take 2 hours to finally get him down, other days he would not go down at all. Therefore he is only getting his am nap of about 1 hour. So he is up until his bed time around 7 since around 11 or so. Now he is screaming going nuts fighting us putting him to bed. I don't know if it is because his room is a bit brighter now with the sun staying out longer, because he is overtired, or because he wants to see and spend more time with us.

Last night he didn't get to bed till 9pm after only one nap in the am from 10-11am. He NW at 1230 and I nursed him back to sleep.

Should I be transitioning to the 2-1?

Please help me find my darling sleeper baby bc this overtired cranky non-sleeper is driving me nuts! Thx :)

I think it's probably a bit of both!  What is the routine at daycare?  If he skips a nap, can you put him to bed even earlier?  I personally have found capping the morning nap at 30-40 mins has allowed my DD to stay on 2 naps for longer, but at nearly 15 months she is sometimes refusing the pm nap even with a short am nap.  For us EBT works well in these cases (eg yesterday napped 45 mins then bed 6pm-6:30am).  I definitely found we had some disrupted BT and NW when I went back to work, in a bub who previously settled fine and STTN.  It only lasted about 2 weeks though (and ended when I went a bit "tough love" on her after explaining what was happening).  Good luck!  It's so easy to feel guilty about going back to work and then sleep problems only make it worse, but your DS was a good sleeper before and will return to that again once he's over this blip.

My aunt comes to my house to watch him and has been trying to implement what I was doing. He will occasionally go to a sitter's house. This upcoming Tuesday is his first day there, so who knows how it is going to go. She has a son the same age who is still on 2 naps a day so we were hoping they would go down at the same time.

I am going to try and cap todays am nap at 40 min and hope he takes an afternoon nap. Days when he skipped his pm nap I tried for an EBT, but he fought that too and ended up screaming and not going down until the normal time anyways. He has been waking at 645 am which is about 15-45 min earlier than usual for him. Now with that being said, that will probably be the time he needs to get up when he goes to daycare a couple times a month. On days when my aunt comes here, I go in and nurse (DF) either at 530am or 6am so sometimes he sleeps in until 745.

When he fights his naps or BT, I used to let him cry for a little bit, but since I have been back at work we have been going in to give him a little more comfort, and now I think maybe he is getting used to it. Maybe the "tough love" is what I have to get back to ;)

I am torn b/w capping his nap in hopes to get 2 naps a day..... or stretching out his am awake time in order to have one long nap at least.

His days used to be:
-3 hours Awake time
-Nap of 1 to 1.5 hr
-4 hours of Awake time
-Nap of 1 to 1.5 hours
-2.5-3 hrs till BT

At 14 months what is the typical Awake time between naps? He seems so tired in the morning and goes down so easily at 3 hours. Today I capped the am nap tp 40 min. He fought the pm nap and finally I nursed and then got him down and he slept for 40 min after 3 hr40 min. He was so grumpy and tired when I woke him in the am.

He is currently screaming bloody murder as I try and get him down for EBT.

Today he had two decent naps ad slept like his normal self. But because he is starting daycare this week (2 days) I know things will get out of whack.

Any suggestions whether to cap the first nap, or try increasing the A time in the am to get to having one nap a day?

Thx :)

I'm going to shift this over to Sleeping for Toddlers as your LO is over one year :)

I think you just have to make a decision based on what you think will suit him best right at the moment.  We have just moved to 1 nap 5 days ago due to DD starting daycare in a week.  The naps have mainly been short but with EBT DD has got through fine so far whereas when I tried at 12 months and even a few weeks ago she just wasn't ready and got OT within a few days.  I would go with your gut, give it a good go of a week or so if you can and reassess then.
