14.5 months old in 2-1 transition getting OT
« on: April 19, 2013, 01:41:11 am »
Hi,
I've been trying to stick to the recommendation to hold on to the 2 naps as long as possible but the past 2 weeks my DD refused her pm nap 4 out of 7 days both weeks. Before that she refused maybe only once or twice. Since we have morning class 2x a week I put her down for noon on those days. Maybe that has thrown her off but all in all it seems like she needs to transition. My problem now is that this week she seems to be terribly overtired and whiny. Puts her head down and cries, whines, wants to be carried around. Is she just OT from staying up after her morning naps all the way till bedtime? Should I try to stick to the 1 nap routine no matter what or do I need to take a step back and adjust the 2 naps? Here's how our 2 nap looked like and how my 1 nap routine could look like. Should I adjust something here? She also doesn't seem to sleep longer than 10h 20min at night even if I put her down earlier. She just wakes earlier but it seems so short compared to the 12h night sleepers I read about everywhere... her total sleep is about 12-13.5h per 24h day. Lately more like 12h but that seems to make her cranky.

2 naps routine:

7.20am wake (snuggle in crib till I get her around 7.40)
8.00am Breakfast (oatmeal mixed with milk, water in cup)
10.25am 1st Nap for 50min-1h20min
               snack
12.00pm lunch
3.30/4pm 2nd nap for 1.10-1h20min recently she won't fall asleep till 5pm playing in her crib or eventually fussing till I get her
6.30pm dinner (usually now whiny)
8.30pm asleep (I put her down closer to 8pm to make up for the missing naps but she now wakes earlier in the morning and is fussy already in the mornings..)  :(

1 nap routine on days we have morning class:

7.20am wake (snuggle in crib till I get her around 7.40)
8.00am Breakfast (oatmeal mixed with milk, water in cup)
10.45am snack
12.30pm lunch (pretty tired by now!)
1pm Nap for usually 1h50min
3.30pm snack
6.30 dinner (I think she's not only tired but also hungry but also won't really eat well. Is it because she's too tired, do I adjust her snack time? It's a little like the newborn days when after 4pm the mood just went downhill at home..)   :-\
8.15/8.30pm asleep

This sounds like my DD before we moved to one nap. When first moving to one nap lots of LOs will manage to nap best at around 11.30/12. Your DD is getting a reasonably good nap at 1pm. Does she wake up happy from this nap or does she seem a bit grizzly or tired still? For some toddlers (mine included) 1hr50 is a good nap, but for some this can be an OT nap. It depends much on how they are when thu wake.

Other thoughts - some when first moving to one nap would do better with a shorter day, closer to 12 hours if the nap is less than 2 hours, so your day may be a little long. Could you move dinner earlier (say 6pm) and start your BT routine a little earlier to work through to a 7.30ish BT?

It may be that your LO is OT because the days he has two naps she's not getting a nap long enough to be restorative. If she's still likely to need two naps at nursery you could ask them to cap one of the naps to 30mins for a few days and see what happens. Have you read these threads?

Let me know what you think.
