Maybe he finds shh pat too stimulating?  Have you tried some variations e.g. just resting a hand on him, just the shh (no pat), stroking his cheek?

Ya I did all those too. Yesterday night we used a white noise machine to have the heart beat sounds for him. He seems to sleep longer however the machine off every 20 mins. Will try out a few days to see if we should purchase another one without stopping every 20 mins. Any suggestion on this? Should we depend on such machine to soothe him?

Another question is if at night sleep he is fussing for a total of one to two hours, should we encourage him to sleep longer to make up with the lost of sleep at night? Or should we wake him up once he hit the time at 7.30am?

White noise is considered a 'good prop' because its very easily transportable and easy to wean - you just gradually turn down the volume.  You don't need a specific machine - you can download load of white noise (or pink/grey/orange noise!) by searching the Internet.  And there are apps for smartphones that will do continuous white noise too :). Loads of mums here swear by it!

In the morning I would try to start your day roughly the same time each day to help set his body clock.  So if desired start time is 7.30, maybe allow up to 30 mins extra lie-in if the night was disturbed but if wakeup time is wildly different every day it can be hard to establish a good sleep pattern.
