Weaning - how to do it
« on: September 04, 2013, 10:24:38 am »
My DS is one next Friday. He is breastfed 4 times a day right now. I'm just not sure how to wean him. I know that once they are a year they can have homo milk, so that's my plan, but I'm just not sure how to transition him from breast milk to homo milk. Currently he's waking up anywhere from 4:30am to 6am hungry (he doesn't take much at all during his evening feed so I'm assuming it's hunger), and then going back to sleep. I think this will be the hardest feed to cut out since it's so easy to nurse him and crawl back in bed.
I don't have a pump, so I'm just unsure of how to transition from 4 feeds a day to none, and when to introduce milk and how much. Any advice is appreciated!

Do you need to wean or is that just what you'd like to do?  There's no reason not to keep feeding if you're happy doing that.

Otherwise there's this FAQ with loads of good information - Weaning

I don't need to. It's just what I had in my head, that when he was a year I would give him cow's milk.  If I keep feeding him, a morning and evening feed, is that enough milk for him for the whole day or should I still introduce cow's milk mid-day?

Is he getting any other dairy?  If you do 2 feeds plus something like cheese or yogurt in the middle of the day, that's enough.  Also, keep in mind that if you're careful about it and make sure he's getting a good amount of calcium, fat, protein, etc from other sources that milk is not an essential.

hi i weaned the night feed first since my DS & my DD were not that interested in it. plus they had teeth so wanted to brush them before bedtime.

the next BF I weaned was after nap. once your LO is down to one nap it is easier. just offer milk/snack instead.

the morning took the longest nad i let my LOs give it up on their own. one morning my DS handed me a book and wasn't interested in nursing so i stopped that one.

i'm still nursing my DD  (18 months) 1-2x a day.

can your DS drink out of a cup? my DD LOVES drinking from a cup (sippie).
