how do i get him to TAKE the pacifier?
« on: August 19, 2013, 07:32:41 am »
Asher is 8 weeks old, he has an on/off relationship with the dummy. sometimes he likes it, other times he just doesnt want it, to which im fine wiht BUT when he does want it he cant hold it in his mouth, ends up crying. i end up replugging a million times just to either get him to sleep or back to sleep, its like he has no suction at all. its very frustrating. what tips can anyone give me to help me get him to hold it in his mouth as he is falling to sleep for those times he wants it. Ive tried not giving it to him and just patting and shhhing but he just keeps crying. stick the dummy in and continue and some time he goes straight to sleep, it falls out when hes fully asleep and that doesnt bother him. he doesnt use it at night much at all but its driving me nuts replugging cos he just wont keep it in his darn mouth!

ETA that sometimes I can keep it in his mouth by placing his hand over the dummy so in effect his hand is "holding" it in place but i cant garauntee that will always work because if he moves his hand, the dummy falls out

Have you tried a few diff dummies? I found the mam ones moulded to the mouth well so didn't fall out like the avent ones do ;)

Has he been checked for a posterior tongue tie? My little one had that and after we got it laser-ed, she was able to hold her pacifier in much much better. Before that I always had to hold it in for her to go to sleep.

nope he hasnt been checked. what are the symptoms?

he doesnt even have a grip on it though, like no suction around the paci with his lips, it just slides out. sometimes he sucks for about 4 seconds but then he justlets it go and then cries... im trying to get him back to sleep now after a 45min nap and I have to hold it there otherwise it falls out and he cries and cries.... Im getting seriously annoyed

I liked the mam ones too.. A good trick Nicole told me was to put it in and hold it and then when he sucked a little to try to pull it out slightly to encourage him to suck it in more. Might not work if he has no suction but worth a try.

My DD was like this at that age. The next size up pacifer worked for her to keep it in her mouth. Turns out she didn't want it anyway. Started spitting it soon after she started taking it. We made do with out it. I discovered that she likes to suck and chew on the silky bit of an Aden and Anais security blanket. I don't mind bc they're so thin and she doesn't fall asleep with it over her mouth.

Why insist on a paci if you have to take away later on?  I had the same issue with my LO and I just gave up

I think it depends on the baby, some have a strong need to suck and can't settle it hour it under 3 mths. They want it, but they can't hold it in, and struggle to settle I without it.

Also when you have more than 1 LO sometimes it's about a little bit of peace from the screaming! For everyone ;)

And for us, both my boys have reflux. The pacifier is very helpful in keeping the milk down and preventing more acid discomfort through increased saliva production and sucking.

Yep it gives me some peace when dealing with he other two, it can help settle him if he wakes and he has a desire to suck, not a huge one but it's still there
