Long naps, short nights for 2.5 year old
« on: September 03, 2013, 11:57:23 am »
Hi there,
Just a quick question regarding my DS who is 2.5. He has always loved his naps during the day and has never consistently done 12 hr nights - usually 10.5-11 hours. He currently goes to bed at 7:30 but it is often 8:30 before he is actually asleep, he just plays and chats to himself in his bed. He then wakes around 6:30am (used to be 7ish, this has gotten earlier lately). He naps at 1pm and I usually have to wake him at 3:30pm, he would sleep 3 hours if I let him.

Do you think I need to be shortening his nap in order to encourage a longer night? I have tried this a couple times and he didn't seem to settle any earlier go bed. I'm wondering if the long naps and shorter nights is just his pattern since he's sort of always been like that or if I should try and "fix" things. He is generally happy and seems rested.

Thanks for any thoughts!

Hi there!

I guess it all depends on whether your happy with the shorter nights I guess? It does sound like your LOs getting too much DTS/ not a long enough day for the amount of DTS which is causing him to be UT at BT.

I know if m DD had 2.5 h each day we'd get 10.5-11h nights. She's 26m and we've capped at 2h for a while now.

If you are going to make a change if stick with it for at least a week to see whether it makes a difference. It may be an idea to push the nap forward to make it shorter. If you think your LO will get OT u would test the water by pushing it forward by 15m only. So in the 1st instance 1.15-3.30 hold for 4dsys to 1week and then 1.30-3.30 and see how he gets on. If you're still having a long time to settle you may have to cap the nap further the other way to give you a longer A to BT to deal with the UT.

What do you think?

Yes, that makes sense! I generally wouldn't mind the shorter night because he's happy throughout the day but we also have a 5 month old who sleeps 7:30-7:30 and I would love them to be on the same schedule. He sometimes wakes the baby up in the morning before she is ready.

Today he actually took a shorter nap (2 hours) so we'll see if it makes any difference at bedtime but wi probably have to give it more time to decide like you said!

Thanks so much :)
