new to EASY, naps went from 1-1.5 hours to 30 min - help!
« on: September 10, 2013, 18:54:21 pm »
Amelia is 6 months 1 week.
at 10 weeks we started to transition her away from paci, no swaddle, no more rocking to sleep,  and sleeping in her crib instead o f on someone.  She did great!
From there her natural sleep rhythm were awake times of 1.5 hours pretty consistently.  We would lay her in her crib, she puts 2 fingers  in her little mouth then passes out [belly sleeper].  We did dream feeds for a bit, but she hasn't needed them  in a while.

About a month ago we started  7am,  10am, 1pm,  4pm, 7pm bed time
her naps have now gone from 1-1.5  hours to 30 min.  This started about 2 weeks ago.  We still keep to the schedule therefore her wake times are about 2.5 hours.
She generally sleeps well at night, waking 1-2 to nurse and falls right back to sleep.  Though the last few nights she's been up every 3 hours.

She's breast milk fed [nurse or bottle], gets solids once/day [typically egg yolk or avocado] after her second nap.
she eats 4 oz every 2.5-3 hours

so far I've tried picking her up then down, letting her cry, try to nurse her back to sleep and patting her back to sleep.  nothing has worked so far.  she wakes, is all smiles but then a bit later yawns and rubs her ears and eyes; so I know she's still tired.

does anyone please have suggestions for me to try? how do I extend her naps??

thank you so very much for any advice  ???

Hi there and welcome to the BW :)

When she wakes does it seem like she's done with sleeping or she wants to sleep more? It might be that she is in the 3-2 nap transition, and this is where her A times may need to increase to 3hrs in order for her to take longer naps. Here is a link about the 3-2 transition: All about the 3-2 transition- 5/6 months

With the increasing A times, I would add about 10 mins or so every 3-4 days to see how she will go. We started with increasing our morning A time first and then worked on afternoon A time. Some babies will have a shorter A time in the morning so you might only be able to stretch her to 2.75hrs.

She might be waking up at night due to short naps and being overtired. Are you putting her to bed earlier for the night if she's had short naps? How do you respond to her at night?

Any signs of teething? Sometimes teething can interrupt their sleeping patters too...

thank you so much.  turns out she caught a cold this week, so I haven't been able to work on naps at all.  Instead just focusing on her sleeping as much as possible.  And interestingly enough, she's been taking 45 - 2 hours naps  [3 per day].  I assume this is because she's not feeling well.  But also, I've started doing PU/PD when she wakes and is whiny or groggy.  It takes a little patience but she has been going back to sleep.  At night, I'm sure she's waking due to coughing and congestion.  As soon as she's ready again, we'll resume EASY.  But I have taken your advice also and putting her down earlier in the evening as well.  That has been working.

Thanks so much for your suggestions.  Really helps and I'll keep you posted
