« on: October 14, 2013, 16:16:57 pm »
DD wouldnt stop crying this afternoon.i tried BFing but
the only thing that calmed her was sucking my baby
finger-i saw a MW do it in the hospital.
when i asked my LC about soothers, she said to wait 2
wks to establish supply+avoid nipple confusion.

I waited as per recommendation and she wouldn't take it! ::)

I know lots of people who give it straight away and have no problem. I honestly wish I had tried sooner. I have always had a very good supply (probably OS) though.

DD got her first taste of the soother at 12 hours old!!!   A nurse at the hospital gave it to her and I was too tired to protest and I'm glad that I didn't.  We would have been lost without it - DD needed lots of suck time and I didn't have it in me to be a human pacifier.  It never created any problems with breastfeeding - no latch problems, not supply problems.  In fact, she's still nursing at 13 months, way longer than I ever anticipated!  If you know you're going to use one, I'd give it to her now.

They always say wait two weeks, I guess they have to be on the safe side. I gave both of mine a dummy before 3 days and they never had any trouble at all with confusion.

Did it right away here with all three...DD2 never took to it but the other two did. Though E is really after her fist/knuckles now so I wonder if she will go for that instead.

It used to be said to not give a soother here but with both my boys no midwife or dr or plunket nurse said that anymore...what we were told is to not give a dummy if baby plus be at all hungry, so really  only offer it after a full feed when LO is crying for comfort with a need to  suck YK?

Some babies just need to suck a lot ::)
Hope the soother helped x

Yes that is kind of what they said here...the ped who checked E out before discharge saw her sucking her thumb and recommended getting a soother pronto...little did she know I had one in my bag already, little E just didnt like those ones!

I finally gave in today. DS is 3 weeks old and i was told by the LC to wait until 6 weeks. He did have some problems latching at first but ever since my milk came in at 4.5 days, he's been a really good eater. He's napping happily in his crib since I gave him the paci  :o Man, my boobies hurt since he's been extra fussy these past few days. I figured he was having a growth spurt but he slept pretty good last night.
Blessed beyond measure.
