Well that was surprisingly easy!  Put him down at 3 hrs 55 (he actually rubbed his eyes and pulled his ears just before I put him down!  At last some tired signs in the morning!), he fell asleep after 4hrs A and slept 1hr 40! So finally a decent morning nap  :) I think I'll mostly stick to short am,  long pm but nice to know I can switch it around if need be.  Do you think it's best to put him down slightly early for his morning nap so he does an UT short nap by himself or is it better to cap it?

Oh,  and yesterday he did manage a mega nap after 3 hrs 30 A time.  He slept for 2 hrs 10!  So it turns out his day is looking remarkably like your DD2's, tink, with 4 hrs,  3.5 and 3 hrs A times. Though in theory he did 3 hrs 30 after a short nap yesterday but seeing as it was an UT short nap I'm guessing 3.5 hrs for his second A is probably about right anyway....? If that makes sense!

Anyway, thank you all very much for all the help.  Hopefully we're pretty much there now :)

So happy for you LLAJ!!!!!!

Happy birthday to your LO Tink :)

Question for you both- do your LOs do better on short am, long pm nap? Mine seems to naturally do longer am, short pm but he wakes grumpy from his second nap a lot which makes for a long stretch to bedtime. Should I just let him do what he naturally does with nap lengths? Or is it better for them to have a longer pm?

I'm sure I read somewhere that low sleep needs babies do better on short am / long pm but I've also read to do it the other way round if your lo hates being woken from naps so not sure!  We fell into short am nap cos that's all jack would do for a while and I found it easier to see his sleepy cues in the afternoon (when he actually was tired!) but I probably was going to move to that anyway.  I prefer it cos I find it easier to get out that way but I think really you can choose whichever way round suits you (or the baby!). As long as you can suss the routine,  that is!

If you are thinking of heading towards set naps I find that easier with a short am nap.  If he wakes early in the morning he goes down for his first nap earlier and has the opportunity to sleep longer,  but I always wake him at 11ish so his second nap starts at 2.30ish and finishes at 4ish. You can do that with long am / short pm if you know they'll always sleep a certain amount of time but judging by how we've gone so far we'd more likely be getting random nap times which would make our afternoon nap random too ;)

Thanks for the info!
Looks like he's enjoying the long am nap and short pm....I tried capping the first nap once and his second nap was lousy so I haven't done it since. I may try in a week or so but things have just started to settle and I'm terrified of screwing things up again!!

Ugh. Spoke too soon. Woke after 35 minutes from am nap! Hopefully we will take a long pm nap...
