4 week old not wanting to dream feed
« on: October 22, 2013, 05:17:19 am »
My DS is 4 weeks old and I would like to start doing a 10:30 dream feed.  I have tried it for two nights now and I can't stir him enough to get him to feed.  The first night I couldn't get him to open his jaw at all.  Tonight I got him to open his jaw but I couldn't get him to suck, I ended up expressing into his mouth, he would then take a couple swallows then stop.  I even tried to wake him so he would be more alert, but I couldn't wake him.  I'm looking for suggestions on how to get him to effectively dream feed.  I have read the FAQ about this and have tried all the suggestions.  Anyone have other suggestions or support?

What time is BT and what time are you attempting the DF? I'm just wondering if trying at a different time may have more success.

Does he take a bottle at all?  Some people have more success offering expressed milk in Bottle at DF.

If you don't manage to DF what time does he tend to wake himself for a feed?

DD3 is the same...I tried for a few nights at different times but never had luck. It made no difference as she ended up dropping all her nightfeeds on her own and sttn.

Bed time is at 8 and I've been trying the DF around 10, maybe that's too early. And I would try a bottle but I had to formula supplement leaving the hospital, it took him a while to not be mad at the breast after that, as he liked the easier flow from the bottle. I'd like to avoid that if I can.

If he doesn't DF he's usually up around 11:30 or 12.

We had the same BT but did a DF later, 11pm. I'd try a diff time so he is not in deep sleep. DF doesn't work for everyone though so don't get stressed out if it just doesn't work.

Yes maybe it is too soon  after BT. 3hrs after BT seems to be a good time for many people to do the DF but maybe try 10.30 first if you are waiting to go to bed.  Or you could just skip the DF and feed when LO wakes naturally.

I agree maybe better to avoid a bottle for now so you don't get a bottle preference going again.
