11.5 mo old textbook taking 2 hrs to fall asleep
« on: October 23, 2013, 04:02:36 am »
So two nights this week my 11.5 month old has taken 1.5-2 hrs to fall asleep. The first night I ended up nursing him to sleep after 2 hrs of going in, slowly withdrawing and then having him get angry again. He's never had stranger anxiety and he has never shown any signs of separation anxiety with me or his papa. My hubby and i are at a total loss of what to do. He's been on one nap the last 7-8 days with a pretty consistent 1.5-1.75 hr nap. We've gotten a couple 2-2.5 hr naps out of him before. Any insight on how to handle this?!? Do we walk in - walk out - slow withdrawal? How long did this last for other kiddo's out there? Are we missing something? he has gotten ibuprofen the last 3 nights because he is majorly teething. Sunday there wasn't much of trigger - but tonight we got him down a little late after a rather stimulating night. Any hints/tips. apparently Papa just got down with just sitting next to his crib with a hand on his back.
Thanks in advance

Can you post a couple of days routine for us hon? We might get a better idea of what could be going on. How long has he been on the one nap for?

Do we walk in - walk out - slow withdrawal?

How has he gone to sleep in the past? was he an independant sleeper who self settled without you there or did he need or presence or other prop (feeding/rocking etc..) to go to sleep? Usually gradual withdrawal is recommended if you are trying to wean a prop where as walk in/walk out is more appropriate if little one has been an independent sleeper previously.

Walk In/Walk Out vs. The Gradual Withdrawal Method (HOW TO CHOOSE)

However, if you think he is having major teething difficulties you might just have to ride it out and do what you can to get him to settle. We found that with illness/teething all bets are off in the sleep department and I would end up sleeping by his cot some nights because he just needed that extra bit of reassurance and support. It was just about getting through it with the least amount of accidental parenting we could get away with! We always found that when whatever it was that was bothering him resolved he went back to sleeping and settling independently (as he had been doing this previously) sometimes even without using walk in walk out.

He has always been a low sleep needs baby - typically 13 hrs/day since he was really young (3 mos-on). His typical day looks like this:

7-7:30 - W
1215/1230 - S - usually sleeps for 1.75 hr, sometimes it's only 1.25/1.5 hr nap.
1900 - Nurse then get him ready for bed. Usually falls asleep by 1930. Maybe later if he woke up around 2:30.

He's been down to one nap the last 2 weeks. He seems to be tolerating it relatively well. We could easily put him down by 11/11:30, but then he would still only take 1.5 hr nap most days and then wouldn't take an afternoon catnap. So after doing that for a week or so, we just decided to push him a little harder. He isn't up for 6-7 hrs anymore since we've pushed him more. Unless he is hard going down.

He has been teething a storm lately - in the last 3 weeks he has gotten 3 teeth and we're pretty sure he's going to get 2 more in the next week or so. Today he went down super easy. I think he's gonna fall into what you're kiddo does. I got away with some APOP this morning and the first hard go-down on Sunday. I think I'll just keep to that. He's generally tolerated illness/teething pretty well so far, but babies change. Just when you think you have them figured out.

he has always been an independent sleeper, except on rare occasions when he's needed a hand on his back or belly when he was quite a bit younger.

Has he ever tacked on to his night sleep? Just wondering whether you could try a slightly earlier nap and then earlier bedtime as he could be getting a bit overtired on the one nap, particularly if they are mostly under 2hrs. Alot of people do this when they drop to the one nap. It only works though if your little one will tack on missed day sleep to their nights.
